Army Posts 1-2 Showing at UNC Duals

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Army West Point wrestling team came back from its 34-day hiatus with a 1-2 showing at the UNC Duals on Friday from Carmichael Arena.

Army opened with a come-from-behind victory over Duke, 23-20, in the morning before dropping decisions to Wyoming (38-3) and No. 23 North Carolina (28-12).

The Black Knights moved to 1-3 on the season, while the Blue Devils moved to 0-1 in their first dual of the year. The Cowboys improved to 4-2 after picking up wins over UNC (21-17) and Duke (34-7). The Tar Heels also dropped their other two matches of the day to Wyoming and American (18-13).

After going down 12-0 to start the dual, a forfeit at 174 pounds set up Noah Stewart to pull Army within one with an 18-0 first-period technical fall over Kaden Russell. Duke took the next two matches, including a technical fall of its own in the heavyweight bout to extend its lead to 20-11.

Needing to win the final three matches, the Cadets stayed in the hunt with second-year Trey Chalifoux battling late in the third period to come away with a 9-6 decision. Rookie Lane Peters followed and gave the Black Knights a much-needed bonus point victory with a 15-0 technical fall over Josh Finesilver to force a winner-takes-all scenario for 141-pounder Austin Harry. The junior from Harvey's Lake, Pa., controlled the final match of the dual from start to finish, coming away with a 10-2 major decision to complete the comeback for Army.

The Black Knights were in a hole early in every dual, rallying only in the opener against the Blue Devils.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES

The Black Knights remain perfect against Duke at 2-0 in the first meeting since the 1974-75 campaign.
Harry picked up his 10th victory at 141 pounds in the final match opposite the Blue Devils.
It was Harry's 35th-career win and ninth in duals.
Ben Harvey led the Black Knights with a 3-0 performance on the day.
Chalifoux picked up his 25th-career victory in his first match against Duke.
Chalifoux improved to 2-0 on the season in duals.
Peters picked up his first-career dual victory versus the Blue Devils.
Of Peters' 11 victories on the season, nine have come with bonus points.
Noah Stewart picked up his first-career dual victory with a technical fall.
Stewart and Peters are tied for the team lead with nine bonus point wins.
Sophomore Cael McCormick made his season debut versus Duke.
Alex Hopkins and Taylor Brown appeared in their first-career dual matches.
