Army Posts 1-2 Showing at UNC Duals
January 05, 2018 | Wrestling
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Army West Point wrestling team came back from its 34-day hiatus with a 1-2 showing at the UNC Duals on Friday from Carmichael Arena.
Army opened with a come-from-behind victory over Duke, 23-20, in the morning before dropping decisions to Wyoming (38-3) and No. 23 North Carolina (28-12).
The Black Knights moved to 1-3 on the season, while the Blue Devils moved to 0-1 in their first dual of the year. The Cowboys improved to 4-2 after picking up wins over UNC (21-17) and Duke (34-7). The Tar Heels also dropped their other two matches of the day to Wyoming and American (18-13).
After going down 12-0 to start the dual, a forfeit at 174 pounds set up Noah Stewart to pull Army within one with an 18-0 first-period technical fall over Kaden Russell. Duke took the next two matches, including a technical fall of its own in the heavyweight bout to extend its lead to 20-11.
Needing to win the final three matches, the Cadets stayed in the hunt with second-year Trey Chalifoux battling late in the third period to come away with a 9-6 decision. Rookie Lane Peters followed and gave the Black Knights a much-needed bonus point victory with a 15-0 technical fall over Josh Finesilver to force a winner-takes-all scenario for 141-pounder Austin Harry. The junior from Harvey's Lake, Pa., controlled the final match of the dual from start to finish, coming away with a 10-2 major decision to complete the comeback for Army.
The Black Knights were in a hole early in every dual, rallying only in the opener against the Blue Devils.

COACHES CORNER
- Head Coach Kevin Ward – "We need to embrace the challenge of tough competition. We left a lot of points out on the mat today. We just need to look like a more confident and aggressive team. I felt like our compete level was too flat emotionally. We need to be more inspired about the challenges we get the opportunity to face. We are a young, but also very skilled and capable team. But we have to start showing it in competition."
