Women's XC Finishes Strong at Paul Short Invitational
Bethlehem, PA – The Army West Point women's cross country team placed 21st out of 40 competing schools at the Paul Short Invitational on Friday morning.
ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- The Black Knights were led by sophomore Bethany Nunnery and junior Abby Halbrook, who were the team's top finishers.
- Freshman Mika Andrews had an impressive performance, crossing third for the Black Knights with a time of 21:45, edging out teammate Ramsey Wagner by less than a second.
Coach's Corner:
"We came into this meet expecting to race at the level we have been training at and we did that today," said head Coach Mike Smith.
"Typically you can expect to have a mix of performance levels from your team at any given meet, but today we had strong performances from all of our scoring women. The top six women had all-time personal best times on this course, and our competitive effort and execution was excellent. Bethany and Abby led us today and demonstrated the kind of toughness that has come to describe them both every time they race. They are relentless competitors. They were hammering the pace all the way to the line. I am glad we have them on our team. Their times today rank as the number 2 and 3 all-time Army times on this course."
"Across the board we showed great competitive effort today, and there is still more to come from this group. I like our combination of talent and work ethic. We are finding out that we have some potential as a team. Now we have to continue to raise the bar of expectation and see if this group will meet the standard."
Runner's Words:
"As a team, we did pretty well," said Halbrook. "I think overall our team a is young one, so we learned a lot today on how to compete with a large group of people and we will be able to carry that through to our next races."
Nunnery stated, "I think we preformed really well as a team. We went against teams that perform at a higher level. It was a good opportunity for us to compete with them, get out of our comfort zone, we really show our strength."
