Early Penalty Kick Lifts Colgate Past Army
September 23, 2017 | Women's Soccer
HAMILTON, N.Y. – An untimely penalty in the box by Army West Point women's soccer early in the match provided Colgate with a penalty kick in a 1-0 victory by the Raiders Saturday evening.
The Black Knights dropped to 2-7-1 and 0-2-0 in Patriot League action, while the Raiders improved to 5-4-0 on the year and 2-0-0 in league play.
Colgate was aggressive from the opening whistle, including a long through ball in the ninth minute that forced goalkeeper Sydney Cassalia to come out and direct the ball out of harm's way.
The Raiders took a 1-0 advantage in the 13th minute after a penalty in the box allowed them a penalty kick opportunity which they converted.
Army peppered the Colgate net early in the game, posting three shots in the first 18 minutes of play, including two on target from Lauren McGovern and Mia Padon.
The Cadets kept pace with the Raiders through the first 45 minutes, matching them in shots on goal and corner kicks with two apiece.
Cassalia was vital in keeping it a one-score game in the middle of the second half, coming up with a pair of big saves. The first came in the 53rd minute when the ball bounced out to a Colgate forward at the edge of the 18 and fired a shot on frame. Her best stop of the night, however, came in the 55th minute when she dove to make the full-extension save.
