Army Drops Patriot League Opener Against Lehigh
September 16, 2017 | Women's Soccer
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's soccer team was unable to overcome a late goal in the first half, dropping its Patriot League opener to Lehigh, 2-0, on Saturday night at Clinton Field.
The Black Knights improved/fell to 2-6-1 on the season and 0-1-0 in the Patriot League, while the Mountain Hawks improved/fell to 5-2-1 overall and 1-0-0 in league play.
Army earned the game's first scoring chance in the fifth minute when senior co-captain Clare Shea fired a shot toward the bottom left corner from 25-yards out that forced Lehigh's Sam Miller to make the diving stop.
The Mountain Hawks responded with a pair of chances that involved crosses from Clare Severe. The first came in the 12th minute when the ball was sent into the left corner where Severe fired a low cross toward the near post for Wadsworth, but she pushed the shot wide of the post on a one-timer.
The second chance was in the 25th minute when Severe tested the far side on a cross from the left that found Ally Friedman. Friedman controlled the past and took her shot at goal, but rookie goalkeeper Sydney Cassalia was up to the task with one of her five saves in the first half.
Lehigh managed to break the scoreless tie and head into the intermission with a 1-0 edge as a ball that bounced around the box found the right foot of Friedman who put it past the diving Cassalia in the final seconds of the first stanza.
The Mountain Hawks increased their lead in the 63rd minute when a pass from Severe deflected its way to Sabrina Mertz who shot to the left side for the goal.
