Army Heads to Capital for Pentagon Invitational

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point volleyball team continues its 2017 season with three games at the Pentagon Invitational Friday and Saturday in Washington, D.C.

The Black Knights will take on service academy rivals Air Force (10 a.m.) and The Citadel (5:30 p.m.) in the heart of the Pentagon Friday, Sept. 1. Army will then face Georgetown on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. at Fort Myer.

Due to security protocol, there will be no video or live statistical coverage of the tournament matches. Periodic updates will however, be provided on the @ArmyWP_VB Twitter account.

ARMY (2-1, 0-0 Patriot League)
- The Black Knights jumped out to a 2-1 record after sweeping both St. Francis Brooklyn and Hartford in last weekend's tournament.
- Sophomore setter Nikki Lum was named to the All-Tournament Team and garnered Army's Athlete of the Week honors for her performance.
- The Honolulu, Hawaii, native secured two double-double performances and averaged 7.27 assists per set on the weekend.
- Senior Jaden Pickell was also named to the All-Tournament Team after posting 28 kills and three service aces.
- The Falcons lead 9-7 in the all-time series against Army, but the Black Knights have come out victorious in the last six meetings over Air Force dating back to 2005.
- Army has defeated The Citadel in all four meetings which dates back to 2004.
- This will be the fourth meeting between the Black Knights and Hoyas who hold a 2-1 advantage.
AIR FORCE (2-2, 0-0 Mountain West)
- The Falcons opened the year at the Bobcat Classic where they went 2-1.
- Air Force opened up the competition with a 3-1 victory over host Montana State and a 3-1 win over Gonzaga.
- The Falcons fell to Illinois 3-0 in the final match.
- On the team's way to the Pentagon Tournament, Air Force played at Navy Wednesday night where the Falcons fell 3-1.
- Middle blocker Piper Heineck and outside hitter Elizabeth Pennington were named to the Bobcat Classic All-Tournament Team.
THE CITADEL (1-2, 0-0 SoCon)
- The Bulldogs are coming off a 1-2 showing at the Holly Springs Invitational.
- The Citadel defeated North Carolina Central 3-1 to open the season then fell to Campbell (3-1) and Tennessee Tech (3-2).
- The Bulldogs were led by Moriah Smith who averaged 4.20 points per set and 3.84 kills per set.
- Logan Smith anchored the offense with 6.57 assists per set, while Samantha Espy led the team with 27 service aces.
GEORGETOWN (2-1, 0-0 BIG EAST)
- The Hoyas opened the season at the D.C. Volleyball Challenge and boast wins over Howard (3-1) and American (3-2).
- Georgetown suffered a five-set loss to Santa Clara in the second match of the tournament.
- Symone Speech led the team with 4.29 kills per set, while Olivia King added 2.75.
- Paige McKnight is the Hoyas' setter and dishes out 9.21 assists per set and added 40 digs on the weekend.
