Army Kicks Off Season Versus Iona, UMass Lowell

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's soccer team kicks off the 2017-18 Academy athletics season this weekend with matchups against Iona and UMass Lowell.
The Black Knights will christen the newly-renovated Clinton Field at Malek Stadium on Friday night against the Gaels before traveling to Lowell, Mass., on Sunday. Both matches are slated for 7 p.m.
ARMY (0-0-0, 0-0-0 Patriot League)
• Army opens its year at home for the fifth-straight season, posting a 2-2-0 record over that span.
• The Black Knights were selected seventh in the Preseason Patriot League Poll with firstie midfielder Clare Shea earning Preseason All-Patriot League honors.
• The Cadets return their three leading scorers from 2016 in Shea (4 goals, 13 points), cow midfielder Samantha Sullenger (4 goals, 9 points) and firstie forward Madison McGinn (2 goals, 5 points).
• Army will have a new goalkeeper commanding its defense for the first time in four years with the graduation of Jordan Cassalia last spring.

• Army sports an all-time record of 12-11-1 against Iona dating back to 1986.
• This is Iona's first meeting with Army since 2009 and the first at West Point since 2007.
• The last time the Gaels played on the Banks of the Hudson, the Black Knights came away with a 3-0 victory.
• Midfielder Amber Crispin led the squad in scoring as a freshman in 2016 with four goals and two assists for 10 points.
• Iona was tabbed 10th in the MAAC Preseason Poll.
• The Gaels' will look to use a combination of fresh talent and veteran leadership as they welcome eight newcomers to join a roster that includes nine combined seniors and graduate students in 2017.

• UMass Lowell will open its season on Sunday night against Army in the first-ever meeting between the two squads.
• Since making the jump to Division I, the Riverhawks are 0-3-1 in season openers.
• Lowell is under the direction of new head coach Francesco D'Agostino, who is looking for his team to keep possession of the ball and build from their own half.
• Key returners for the Riverhawks include their three captains: forward Katelyn Vieira, midfielder Rachel Morrier and goalkeeper Julia Schneider.
• Vieira led the team in goals (4) and points (8) last season.
• Morrier, who is serving as team captain for the second year, recorded three goals and an assist in 2016.
• Schneider posted a career-high in save percentage at .811, while recording career lows in goals against (18) and goals against average (1.19).
