Black Knights Blank Hartford to Earn DH Split
May 06, 2017 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point baseball team split a doubleheader here Saturday with Hartford on senior day.
The Hawks registered a close 3-2 victory in the opener before falling to the Cadets 10-0 in the nightcap. With the win in Game 2, it marked the second time this season the Black Knights blanked their opponent and first since a 5-0 shutout of Bowling Green on March 11.
Prior Game 1's first pitch, Army honored five cadet-athletes who played in their final regular season contests at Doubleday Field. Kris Lindner, David Monge, Jeremy Mortensen, Baggio Saldivar and Alex Dickerson were each acknowledged.
Army jumped in front 1-0 in the third inning of the second game after Jacob Hurtubise scored on a wild pitch. The Black Knights didn't record their first hit in the game until an inning later when Saldivar broke through up the left side with a two-out single.
The Cadets tacked on two runs in the fifth and three runs in sixth to create a 6-0 gap between the teams. Army then put a stamp on the victory when John McCarthy went yard in the eighth inning to bring home three more runs. Prior to McCarthy's hit, Jon Rosoff singled to right field to score Josh White for the Black Knights' first of four runs in the inning.
Tyler Giovinco was beyond impressive for Army in the win, pitching seven strong innings allowing just three hits and one walk. Two of those hits came in the opening half inning. The sophomore did not concede any hits after the third frame.
Mike Gagliardi and Drake Titus then teamed up to complete the shutout over the final two innings. Both gave up two hits during their time on the hill.
In Game 1, a Dickerson two-out single in the opening inning scored the game's first run. His hit brought home McCarthy for the early 1-0 advantage.
The visitors would answer in the top of the fourth with a two-out, three-run homer to right field to take over the lead at 3-1.
Army tried to rally in the bottom half using a White triple with two outs, which scored Monge, but the home team would only manage one run. The Cadets had one last chance in the bottom of the ninth to knot the score after White reached on a three-base throwing error with two outs. Unfortunately, the Hawks registered the final out of the frame to strand the potential game-tying run.
Jacob Carte earned the tough loss, despite a solid effort on the hill. The sophomore allowed four hits, three runs and no walks during his six innings of work. The Charlotte, N.C., native did not give up a hit until a two-out single in the third. All four of the Hawks' hits against the righty came with two outs in the inning.
Rosoff finished a team-best 3-for-6 in the games with four RBI and a run scored. McCarthy chipped in four hits, one home run and four RBI during his nine at bats, while Saldivar and Trey Martin added two hits each.
