Hartford Takes Series Finale From Army
May 07, 2017 | Baseball
HARTFORD, Conn. – The Army West Point baseball team dropped a 6-2 decision here Sunday to Hartford at newly built Dunkin' Donuts Park.
With the victory, the Hawks took the three-game series, 2-1, after the two teams split a doubleheader on Saturday.
Army jumped in front early after Trey Martin drilled a bases loaded, two-RBI double down the left field line. His hit scored Matt Hudgins and Alex Dickerson, who led off the inning with a walk and single, respectively. The Black Knights still had two runners in scoring position with no outs but Hartford rebounded to retire the next three batters down in order.
The Hawks posted a huge fourth inning, in which the designated home team scored all six of its runs. Army notched the first out of the frame but the next eight batters reached base safely either by a hit or walk to push through the go-ahead runs.
The Black Knights tried to rally but the deficit proved to be too much.
Martin finished 2-for-3 with two RBI to lead the Cadets. Hudgins, Dickerson and White all chipped in one hit each.
Blake Walters (0-1) was credited with the loss after allowing nine hits, six runs and three walks in his five innings of work. Most of that damage came in the fourth inning. Cam Opp then came in for relief, giving up just one walk during his two innings on the mound. Daniel Gibbons closed out the final frame, forcing the Hawks to ground out in order to retire the side.
