Army Takes 3-of-4 at Bucknell
April 09, 2017 | Baseball
LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Army West Point baseball team split a doubleheader at Bucknell here Sunday to hand the Black Knights 3-of-4 wins on the weekend.
Sunday's nightcap might have been the weekend series' most exciting contest as the game was decided in extra innings. Army eventually came out on top 16-14 in 11 innings after the Bison had taken the opener 10-5 in seven innings.
The Black Knights saw their six-game winning streak halted with the loss in Game 1, but after recording their thrilling victory in Game 2, the Cadets have now won seven of their last eight outings.
Two weeks into the Patriot League season, Army is currently tied for first place with a conference mark of 6-2.
Game 2 was a back-and-forth affair. Bucknell took an early 3-1 lead after scoring runs in the first and second. Army came back to rally for four big runs in the top of the fifth, to jump in front 5-3. Unfortunately, a grand slam by the Bison in the bottom half of the inning awarded the home team a 7-5 advantage.
John McCarthy put the Cadets back on top, 8-7, with a two-out three-run double to center field in the top of the sixth. Bucknell would not go away though sparking a five-run bottom half to break the game open at 12-8. Over the next two innings, the Black Knights chipped away at the deficit, notching two runs in the seventh and eighth to tie the game at 12-12.
But the scoring would not stop there. Bucknell knocked in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the eighth to take a 13-12 edge. Army then responded with two runs of its own in the top of the ninth to hand the Cadets a 14-13 advantage. McCarthy doubled again to bring home a run during that inning, while Alex Dickerson converted on a sacrifice bunt which turned into an infield single to reel in Army's second run.
The home team rallied one last time to knot things up in the bottom of the ninth, forcing Army's fifth extra inning game this season.
After neither team crossed home plate in the 10th, McCarthy smacked his program record fourth double of the game to place two runners in scoring position in the top of the 11th. Josh White had earned a leadoff walk prior to McCarthy's at bat. Kris Lindner was then put on first following an intentionally walk before Brandon Lee singled through the left side to bring home what would be the eventual game-winning runs. Jacob Carte came in to pitch the bottom of the 11th and posted a one, two, three inning to preserve the thrilling victory.
Game 1 went a little differently for Army. The Black Knights took a 3-2 lead after two innings, thanks in part to White's two-run homer to left center. The Bison would rally for eight runs in the third though to create an 8-3 gap between the teams. The Cadets tried to answer, and even notched two runs back in the fifth on Matt Hudgins' fourth long ball of the year, but the deficit would prove to be too much.
Tyler Giovinco earned the loss in Game 1 but rebounded for the win in Game 2. Also with the save in the nightcap, Carte notched the second of his career.
McCarthy had himself a day, finishing 7-for-10 with four doubles, five RBIs, and four runs scored. The junior touched base 11 times in the twin bill. Jon Rosoff also chipped in five hits, while Dickerson and Jacob Hurtubise added four hits each.
