April 11, 2017 | Baseball
The Jaspers pulled in front 3-0 after one-and-a-half innings but the Black Knights responded with three runs in the bottom of the second to knot the score at 3-3. Kris Lindner and Matt Hudgins singled to kick off the inning before Alex Dickerson earned a walk to load the bases. Jon Rosoff followed that up by singling to right field to bring home Lindner. Still with the bases locked up, Trey Martin converted on a sacrifice fly to score Hudgins from third. Manhattan tallied the second out the inning but Jacob Hurtubise singled on the ensuing at bat, which allowed Rosoff enough time to cross home plate.
The visitors quickly added four more runs in the third and fourth before notching a solo shot over the left field fence in the seventh to break the game open at 8-3.
Army would not go away though sparking three runs of its own in the bottom of the seventh. Rosoff was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. After the Jaspers tallied the first out, Will Sarsen drilled a double to right center to place runners on second and third. Manhattan earned the second out of the inning during the next at bat, but Josh White walked on the ensuing play to load the bases. John McCarthy then stepped up and singled through the left side to bring home Army's first run of the inning. The rally wasn't over there as Lindner followed that up reaching on an error, which allowed another run to come home. On the ensuing play, Hudgins singled to right field to score White from third.
Army had a chance to tie things up with runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the eighth but ultimately weren't able to convert.
Hudgins and Rosoff both tallied two hits apiece with both reeling in one RBI. Hudgins also accounted for one run, while Rosoff touched home plate twice. Hurtubise, McCarthy, and Martin all added RBIs in the game as well.
Mike Gagliardi got his second starting nod, pitching 2.1 innings in the loss. The sophomore allowed three hits, four runs, three of which were earned, and four walks during his time on the hill. Joe Santoro came in for relief to pitch the next 4.2 innings, giving up six hits, four earned runs and four walks. The rookie also struck out a career-high five batters while on the rubber.
