Eight-Run Second Inning Lifts Army Past Siena

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Army West Point baseball team posted eight runs in the second inning to ultimately take a 9-4 victory over Siena here Wednesday afternoon.

The Saints tallied the first out of the second inning, but Matt Hudgins and Jon Rosoff notched back-to-back singles to place runners on first and third. Baggio Saldivar earned a walk on the ensuing play to load things up before John McKenna singled up the middle to score two runs. Trey Martin then doubled to left center to bring home Saldivar from second before Jacob Hurtubise singled on the next at bat to make it a 4-0 ballgame.

Hurtubise and Martin then converted on a double steal, which brought home another Army run. Josh White earned a walk to place runners on the corners after Hurtubise had stolen second during the at bat. Kris Lindner kept the wheel moving by singling up the middle for another Black Knights score.

After a Siena pitching change, Lindner and White advanced to second and third following another double steal. The Saints finally recorded the second out but Hudgins singled for the second time in the inning on the ensuing play to close out the Army scoring with two additional runs.

Siena tallied two runs back throughout the third and fourth but an insurance run for the Cadets in the fifth inning ultimately put the game out of reach.

Drake Titus was impressive in his first career start, going 5.0 innings allowing six hits and just two runs. The rookie struck out a career-high seven batters during his time on the hill as well. Logan Smith then came in for relief, giving up only three hits in his 2.0 innings of work. Sam Messina closed out the final two innings, allowing two runs on three hits. Smith and Messina also posted four and three strikeouts, respectively.

Martin finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run. Hudgins, Rosoff, and Saldivar registered two hits each, while McKenna brought home a career-best three RBI.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES

Every Black Knights starter but one touched home plate at least once in the game.
Martin tallied Army's lone extra base hit in the game and it was his sixth double of the season.
Titus improves his overall record to 2-2.
Rosoff is riding a three-game hit streak.
Hurtubise (2x), White, Lindner and Martin all added to their stolen base totals for the year after swiping a bag in the win.
Four Saints finished with multiple hits in the game and the home team notched four extra base hits, including a solo home run to left center.
Siena earned five stolen bases.
John Nolan was credited with the loss after giving up eight runs on six hits in 1.1 innings of work.
Matt Pierce then came in to pitch the next 6.2 innings, allowing just one run on six hits.
Army is now 8-3 in its last 11 outings.
