Holy Cross Takes Two From Army
April 15, 2017 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point baseball team dropped a doubleheader here Saturday afternoon to Holy Cross.
The Crusaders opened the day with a close 2-0 seven-inning victory before recording a 16-1 win in the nightcap.
Prior to the start of the twin bill, Army honored 13 special education teachers from the West Point elementary and middle school as part of their Autism Awareness Day. Each special guest threw out a ceremonial first pitch before getting a standing ovation from all in attendance at Doubleday Field.
In the opening game, Holy Cross posted a leadoff home run to left field to create a 1-0 gap between the teams. After the early blunder, starting pitcher Jacob Carte settled in and allowed only three more hits throughout his impressive 6.1 innings of work.
The Crusaders tacked on one more run late in the top of the seventh thanks to a wild pitch, which ultimately secured the visitors the win.
In Game 2, Holy Cross broke a scoreless deadlock with a run in the third. The Crusaders then added three additional runs in the top of the fourth following nearly back-to-back doubles to increase their edge to 4-0.
The Black Knights scored one run back in the bottom half after Jon Rosoff crossed home plate. The junior singled through the right side to start the small rally. He shifted up a base on the ensuing play thanks to a wild pitch before Kris Lindner's ground out moved him to third. During the next at bat, John McCarthy flied out to center field to bring home Army's lone run in the game.
Unfortunately, 12 additional runs for the Crusaders handed them the 16-1 victory.
Jacob Hurtubise finished 4-for-7 on the day, while Rosoff chipped in two hits and a run in his five at bats.
Jeremy Mortensen got the starting pitching nod for the second game. The junior gave up eight hits, five runs, four of which were earned, in his 4.1 innings on the hill. The Coppell, Texas, native added five strikeouts.
