Last Second Goal Spoils Army’s Comeback

WEST POINT, N.Y. – After coming back late in the game, the Army West Point women's lacrosse team fell 15-14 to Kennesaw State Tuesday afternoon after a last second goal by the Owls.

SCOUTING ARMY
- Manuela Cortes recorded a natural hat trick after scoring four straight goals. Rachel Hornick also netted four in the effort, while Amy Johnston notched a hat trick for the third consecutive game.
- Erin Jollota added two goals, while Samantha Stewart tallied one.
- Cortes dished out two assists today as Johnston and Stewart both had one apiece.
- Johnston led the team with six draw controls, while Emma Roerty picked up three.
- Kayla Rowley made nine saves in 38:38 minutes, while Maddie Burns added one in the rest of the time. Rowley and Cortes ranked first on the team with four ground balls.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Goals from Stewart and Johnston bookended two goals by the Owls to kick off the game. Stewart also tallied an assist on Johnston's goal to make it a tie game 13:00 in.
- At the 14:43 and 13:32 minute marks, Hornick netted two-straight goals to push Army ahead 4-2.
- Kennesaw State went on a 5-0 run in a seven minute span to reclaim the lead. Hornick ended the run when she scored with 3:19 left on the clock.
- The two teams traded goals in the last two minute of the half bring the score to 8-6 in favor of the Owls. Jollota found the back of the net for Army off a pass from Cortes.
- Kennesaw State jumped ahead by five goals early in the second half sparked by a 3-0 run in the first nine minutes.
- Cortes put a halt to the streak when she scored four goals in a row to post a natural hat trick. This brought the game within one for the Cadets (11-10).
- Jollota netted one in the mix before the Black Knights fired off three consecutive goals.
- Johnston bookended Hornick's goal with her second coming just three seconds after her classmates. The run knotted up the score at 14-14 with 2:55 to go. Johnston had a hand in all three goals as she assisted Hornick's before Cortes assisted hers.
- Kennesaw State netted the game winner in the final 34 seconds of the game to secure the victory.
TURNING POINT
- The Owls' 20-12 advantage on draw controls gave them the opportunities to maintain the game. Even though Army won the final three draws, Kennesaw State was able to score with 34 seconds left to win.
UP NEXT
- The Black Knights will open league play Saturday when they head to Lafayette on Saturday at 1 p.m.
