Army Tops Georgetown, Detroit on Saturday

MADEIRA BEACH, Fla. – The Army West Point softball team picked up two more victories at the EMU Madeira Beach Invitational with wins over Georgetown, 2-1, and Detroit, 4-2.

The Black Knights improved to 5-4 on the season, while the Hoyas fell to 1-11 and the Titans dropped to 3-5.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- The Black Knights won their first-ever matchup against Georgetown and improved to 2-3 against Detroit in a series that dates back to 1986.
- It was the first meeting between Army and the Titans since 1993.
- Sophomore pitcher Renee Poirier tied Army's career record in saves with her 12th and first of the season against Detroit.
- The Plainville, Mass., native also earned her third win of the year in the first game versus Georgetown.
- On the day, Poirier tossed eight innings of one-run ball while striking out eight.
- Freshman Amelia Trotter led the offensive effort today by going 4-for-6 with two doubles and an RBI.
- Rookie Lacey Swafford stretched her hitting streak to eight games, bringing her season hits total to 11.
KEY MOMENT
- The Black Knights came from behind in both games to extend their winning streak to five games.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. GEORGETOWN
- After issuing a leadoff walk in the first inning, sophomore pitcher Renee Poirier struck out two Hoyas to close the opening frame.
- In the third inning, Poirier gave up her first hit in 9.1 innings with an infield single by Theresa Kane.
- Army followed suit in the bottom half of the inning with a leadoff single to left field by Ashley Yoo.
- Georgetown scored the game's first run in the top of the fourth with a solo shot to right.
- Once again, the Black Knights provided a response with the game-tying run in the bottom of the inning.
- Army compiled three consecutive hits to push across its first run of the game from Emily Ballesteros, Ameila Trotter and Nena Riccoboni.
- The Hoyas compiled a pair of singles in the sixth, but were unable to figure out how to beat Poirier again.
- Junior Emily Gray recorded the game-winning base knock in a strange seventh inning.
- Georgetown escaped danger and seemed like it was going to force extra innings after recording a double play after giving up a leadoff double to Trotter.
- Sophomore Maddie Kim was able to keep the inning alive with a two-out single before Gray brought her home with a double to right center.
HOW IT HAPPENED vs. DETROIT
- After a one-two-three inning for Army in the top of the first, Detroit jumped out to a 2-0 lead.
- Alyssa James doubled to center, scoring Cheyenne Willeford from second. She later stole third and scored when the following batter singled to center.
- Freshman pitcher Macey Newbary settled into the game after the first inning, retiring 10 of the next 11 batters she faced.
- Sophomore Izzy Gates documented a single to left for Army's first hit of the game with two outs in the third inning.
- The Black Knights followed that up with a single by freshman Lacey Swafford who extended her hitting streak to eight games.
- Army pushed across its first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning that started with a one-out walk by Yoo.
- She scored on a groundout by Gates from third after Trotter's second double of the day.
- The floodgates opened in the following inning for Army, as it plated three more runs to take a 4-2 advantage.
- Errors plagued the Titans that inning, as three miscues proved to be costly, allowing Ballesteros and Gaff to reach base, in addition to allowing Tyler McKinney score the game-tying run.
- Kim plated Hoover with a single to left to give Army its first lead of the game, before scoring on a Trotter single two batters later.
- After an uneventful sixth inning, Poirier navigated her way through the seventh for her first save of the season.
UP NEXT
- Army will conclude its first trip to the Sunshine State against Brown tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.
