Three Reach Double Figures in Win Over Holy Cross

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's basketball team won for the fifth time in a row, with a 60-41 Patriot League victory over Holy Cross on Wednesday evening at Christl Arena.
Army collects its fifth win in a row and improves to 19-6 overall and 10-4 in the league, while Holy Cross drops to 6-19 and 4-10.
Sophomore Madison Hovren led the Black Knights with 16 points and 13 rebounds for her 14th double-double of the season. With 14 career double-doubles, Hovren moved into a tie with Jen Hazlett (USMA '14) for third on Army's career double-doubles list since the 1990-91 season.
Junior Aliyah Murray came up one rebound shy of a double-double, with 12 points and nine boards, while classmate Janae McNeal also netted 12 points and pulled down six rebounds. Junior Daizjah Morris added eight points, and classmate Lena' Hicks scored six points off the bench.
Tricia Byrne paced Holy Cross with 13 points, while Lauren Manis totaled 10 points and seven boards.

- The Black Knights improve to 15-15 against the Crusaders at Christl Arena.
- Hovren recorded her 14th double-double of the year, with 16 points and 13 rebounds, to tie Jen Hazlett (USMA '14) for third in team history in career double-doubles since the 1990-91 season.
- Holy Cross' four points in the second quarter mark the lowest by an Army opponent in a single quarter this season, topping the previous best of five, allowed in the fourth quarter against Colgate on Feb. 8.
- Five Cadets finished with multiple steals, including Hovren and McNeal, who each tallied three. Hicks, Murray and Daizjah Morris all recorded two steals.
- The 41 total points from the Crusaders were the second-fewest allowed by the Black Knights this season, after they allowed 40 points to Wagner on Dec. 5.
- The 41 points are also the fewest Army has allowed in a Patriot League game since giving up just 38 against Boston University on Feb. 24, 2016.
- Army outrebounded Holy Cross, 44-28.
TURNING POINT
- Army used a 17-0 run in the second quarter to build a 16-point lead, 35-19, with 2:11 remaining before halftime. The Black Knights outscored the Crusaders 17-4 in the second period to pull away and lead by 14, 35-21, at the half.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Army finished the first quarter on an 8-3 run to take an 18-17 lead into the second period.
- Holy Cross struck first in the second quarter to move in front, 19-18, 45 seconds into the frame before the Black Knights responded with 17 straight points as part of a 17-2 run to end the half.
- Army's 17-0 run was bookended by Hicks, who started the scoring stretch with a pair of free throws with 8:50 remaining. Hicks ended the scoring run with a lay-up with 2:11 left in the half to make the score 35-11 before Holy Cross hit two free throws with 1:44 left to bring the score to 35-21 by halftime.
- The Cadets held the Crusaders to just one field goal in the entire second quarter and limited the visitors to four points, for the lowest in a single quarter by an Army opponent this season.
- Hovren netted six points during the second period, while Hicks and Murray each totaled four.
- Army stretched its lead to as many as 20 points in the third quarter, when it held a 49-29 advantage with 3:28 remaining in the period.
- Holy Cross netted the last three points of the quarter, with one free throws from Manis with 40 seconds on the clock, and two more from Byrne with 15 ticks left to bring the score to 49-32 after three.
- The visitors got their deficit back down to 14 points, 49-35, by the 8:30 mark of the fourth period, but didn't come any closer the rest of the way.
