Black Knights Open Spring Season on the Road

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's tennis team will begin its spring 2017 campaign on the road as the team will split the squad at two events this weekend.
A portion of the team will travel to the NJIT Invite on Saturday and Sunday, while the remainder of the team heads to Ithaca for the season-opening dual against Cornell on Sunday at 9 a.m., at the Reis Tennis Center.

ARMY (0-0, 0-0 Patriot League)
• Sophomore Kirby Einck led the Black Knights in the fall in wins (17), singles wins (nine) and tied for the lead in doubles wins (eight) with her partner, Allyson Hayley, and freshman Danna Funaro.
• Army had eight players with double-digit victories in the fall: Melanie Allen, Steph Johnson, Genevieve McCormick, Nancy Porter, Gloria Son, Einck, Funaro and Hayley.
• Six returning Cadets were penciled into the starting lineup in at least 10 matches in the spring 2016 season, led by McCormick with 20.
CORNELL (0-0, 0-0 Ivy League)
• Senior Marika Cusick is ranked 16th regionally for the Big Red in singles, while junior captain Priyanka Shah and sophomore Mariko Iinuma are Cornell's top-ranked doubles team in sixth.
• Cusick and fellow senior Alexandra D'Ascenzo are ranked 10th in the Northeast region in doubles. Cusick posted a record of 7-5 in singles and 12-1 in doubles in the fall, while D'Ascenzo went 10-5 and 13-2, respectively.
• Shah tied Cusick for second on the team in total wins for the fall with 19 after going 9-5 in singles and 10-4 in doubles.
NJIT INVITE
• The Highlanders were led last season by Alba Rosas Garcia, who totaled 11 wins on the season.
• Sophomore Rafaella Sampaio collected nine wins as an ASUN All-Freshman team honoree in 2016.
