Army Snaps Streak, Edges Mercyhurst 4-1

WEST POINT, N.Y. – After scoring three unanswered goals, the Army West Point hockey team defeated Mercyhurst 4-1 Saturday night to garner two points in Atlantic Hockey. The Black Knights' win snapped the Lakers' 25 game unbeaten streak and marked head coach Brian Riley's first win against his son Jack Riley.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Army netted its third shorthanded goal of the season and second of the weekend in tonight's game. Dominic Franco notched the second of his career last night after posting his first last night. Â
- Dalton MacAfee, Trevor Fidler and Brendan Soucie were the other Black Knights listed in the goal category this evening.
- Zach Evancho, Alex Wilkinson, C.J. Reuschlein, Conor Andrle, Tyler Pham and Nick DeCenzo were all credited with assists in the game.
- Parker Gahagen boasted 30 saves in the win.
- After the Lakers went perfect on the penalty kill Friday night, the Black Knights netted a power play goal in tonight's game. It was the Cadets' 18th of the year.
- Tonight was the Cadets' first win in their gold jerseys after debuting them last weekend.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Army came out strong and charged ahead 1-0 with nine minutes remaining in the first period. MacAfee scored on an open net after Evancho hit him on the far post with help from Wilkinson. The Lakers evened things up on a power play goal from the slot at the 14 minute mark of the second frame.
- Fidler found Wildung out of position 59 seconds into the third stanza when Andrle swung it to Reushlein who passed it in front of the net to Fidler.
- This put the Black Knights up 2-1 with almost a full period of hockey remaining.
- Franco struck again with an unassisted shorthanded goal halfway through the final period. It was his second shortie of the weekend.
- With a minute to go in the game, Soucie secured the 4-1 victory with an empty net goal after DeCenzo dumped it into the zone.
UP NEXT
- Army plays AIC Tuesday in a mid-week tilt in Springfield, Mass., before returning to Tate Rink next Saturday to face the Royal Military College. Tuesdays game will begin at 7:05 p.m., while Saturday's features a 7:35 p.m. start.
