Army Falls to Mercyhurst on Friday Night

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision to Mercyhurst Friday night in the first of the two-game weekend.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Army netted its second shorthanded goal of the season in tonight's game. Dominic Franco notched the first of his career as the Black Knights' only goal of the night.
- Tyler Pham was give Army's lone assist in the game to put him on a four-game streak with helpers.
- The Black Knights recorded 46 shots in the game, a season-high. It is also the most the team has notched since February of 2016 when the Cadets totaled 41.
- Trevor Fidler led the team with a season-high seven shots, while Brendan Soucie had six.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Mercyhurst struck first with a goal 11 minutes into the opening frame. Tyler Enns scored on Gahagen's right side with help from Kane Elliott and Jack Riley.
- While on the power play to start the second, the Lakers netted their second of the night off a bizarre puck bounce from behind the goal. This put Mercyhurst ahead 2-0.
- The Black Knights chipped away at the opposition's lead at the 10 minute mark of the second stanza. Pham stole the puck from the Lakers in the middle of the ice and fed it to a wide open Franco who was one-on-one with Wildung. He went top shelf to secure his first career shorthanded goal and the team's second of the season.
- Army was called for back-to-back slashes six minutes into the final frame which gave the Lakers a 5-on-3 advantage. Mercyhurst was able to score on the opening chance to give the team a 3-1 lead.
UP NEXT
- The Black Knights and Lakers will face each other again tomorrow at Tate Rink in front of a sellout crowd. The puck will drop at 7:05 p.m. and will be broadcast on Time Warner Cable throughout New York State.
- After the game, fans will be able to skate with the Black Knights for the second time this season. To participate, just bring your skates to the game.
