Men’s Rugby Welcomes Iona for Rugby East Opener

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's rugby team continues its three-game home stand by welcoming the Gaels of Iona for the first Rugby East match of 2016 on Friday.

Both sides are looking to preserve their respective spotless records. The all-time series between the Black Knights and Gaels is 1-1 with the home team emerging victorious on both occasions. Last season, Iona handed a fourth-ranked Army team its first loss of the season, 43-26.
ARMY (1-0, 0-0 Rugby East)
• The Black Knights defeated Stony Brook, 49-3, to open the 2016-17 campaign.
• Junior Jon Kim stole the show, setting a new program single-game record for conversions with seven in his collegiate debut.
• Juniors Jake Lachina and Jareth Long-Garrett each dotted down twice, while Harrison Farrell, Luke Heun and Connor Parker scored once.
• Army enters the match with a record of 16-1 at Anderson Rugby Complex.
IONA (2-0, 0-0 Rugby East)
• Iona defeated Fordham, 36-20, and Fairfield, 48-0, in its previous two matches in 2016.
• The Gaels' key returners are flanker Jon Pettereti, center Mike Searella and flanker John V'allarra.
• Despite being undersized without a player taller than six feet or heavier than 200 pounds, Iona has a very experienced, veteran squad.
