Men’s Soccer Returns to the Field at Marist

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Coming off a 1-1 weekend to open the season, the Army West Point men's soccer team is back in competition on Sunday, Sept. 4, when it faces Marist about an hour up the road in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Game time is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Army and Marist renew a rivalry that began 1982, with the teams playing to a 2-2 tie in the initial matchup. The sides last met on Sept. 16, 2014 and played to a 1-1 draw in Poughkeepsie. Army's last win in the series came in 2013, with the Black Knights earning a 2-0 win, while Marist's most-recent victory over Army came in a 6-4 decision in 2011. Marist owns an 11-4-2 lead in the all-time series between the in-state rivals.
Marist went 7-9-2 overall last season, including a 5-3-2 record in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). The Red Foxes were awarded the No. 3 seed in the MAAC Tournament, but were upset in the quarterfinals by No. 6 Siena.
ARMY (1-1, 0-0 PATRIOT LEAGUE)
• Army defeated Air Force, 3-1, in its season opener on Aug. 26 before falling to a 3-2 defeat against LIU Brooklyn on Aug. 28. Sunday marks Army's first away match of the year.
• Freshman Rex Epps was named Patriot League Rookie of the Week after finishing the week with a pair of goals. Epps leads the Black Knights with two goals, while seniors Christian Clark and Nick Williams, and freshman Tyler Mitchiner all have one.
• Junior Christian Nolasco has started both games and is 1-0 on the season, while freshman Justin Stoll is 0-1 after appearing as a reserve in the final 33:51 of the LIU Brooklyn match.
• The Cadets have started four freshman in each game this season, with Epps, Zac McGraw and Keenan O'Shea starting in both contests. Peter Meyer cracked the starting 11 in the Air Force match and Mitchiner was a starter for the LIU Brooklyn game.
MARIST (1-0-1, 0-0 METRO ATLANTIC ATHLETIC)
• Marist enters the weekend fresh off a 3-1 home victory over Hartwick on Aug. 30. The Red Foxes tied Albany, 2-2, in their season opener on Aug. 26.
• Sophomore Cameron Harr scored all three goals for Marist in the win against Hartwick, giving the Red Foxes a 2-0 lead before making the score 3-1 in the 52nd minute.
• Junior Kevin Kappock and sophomore Simon Lund Jorgensen each have a goal for Marist, while Lund Jorgensen also has three assists.
• Goalkeeper Mark Rajovic has played every minute in goal and has 13 saves on the year.
UP NEXT
Army finishes out its two-game road trip on Sept. 10, when the Black Knights face Hofstra at 5:30 p.m. in the second match of a doubleheader with the Army and Hofstra women's soccer teams.
