Men’s Tennis Set to Face Cal in NCAA Tournament

BERKELEY, Calif. – The Army West Point men's tennis team continues its season with an NCAA Tournament match-up against 13th-seeded California. The Black Knights, the Patriot League Champions for the ninth time to earn a spot in the field, play on Saturday, May 14, with first serve at 3 p.m. EST/12 p.m. PST at the Hellman Tennis Complex.

SEASON SUMMARY
Army posted an 18-8 record en route to its ninth league title and seventh NCAA Tournament appearance.
The Black Knights lost six of nine matches at one point but closed by winning 13 of their final 15 matches. The final match against Navy in the Patriot League Championship was an enthralling affair.
The match came down to the fifth singles match between junior Kyle Barnes and Navy's Krishna Jana. Barnes, who dominated the first set 6-1, lost the second set, 7-5. The match went into a third set tiebreaker and after having three previous chances at match point, Barnes won the match on his fourth attempt to clinch the title for the Black Knights, winning 7-4 in the tiebreaker.
Multiple Cadets were ultimately honored by the league, winning three of the four major awards. Poling earned Coach of the Year, senior Harrison McCormick and junior Grant Riechmann were given Doubles Team of the Year, and freshman David Mitchell won Rookie of the Year after securing Patriot League Tournament MVP honors. Additionally, junior Sam Lampman was placed on the All-Patriot League First Team while Mitchell, sophomore Michael Nguyen, and Riechmann were all tabbed All-Patriot League Second Team.
ARMY IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT
The Black Knights have yet to come out victorious in the NCAA Tournament in six trips. Their most recent appearance came in 2014 at Virginia. This will mark the second time Army has played in the state of California in the postseason, previously playing Stanford in 2011.
BLACK KNIGHTS PROJECTED LINE-UP
Singles Doubles
The Golden Bears posted a 17-6 record throughout the spring and enter as the 13th-seed. Cal closed the season strong winning six straight matches, all against ranked opponents, to reach the PAC-12 Championship where UCLA won the title, 4-1. At home, the Golden Bears sport a perfect 9-0 record.
Five California players are nationally-ranked in singles by the ITA including Florian Lakat and Andre Goransson who are 30th and 31st in the nation, respectively. In doubles, Lakat pairs with Filip Bergevi, the 119th-ranked player in singles, and are the ninth-ranked combination in the nation.
THE OTHER MATCH
Ole Miss and Denver play after the Black Knights and Golden Bears finish to determine who will face the winner of those two. The Rebels, an at-large team from the SEC ranked 27th in the nation, has a record of 15-10 while the 47th-ranked Pioneers, the Summit League Tournament champions, stands at 18-7.
SERIES HISTORY
Army has never played any of the three teams in the Berkeley Regional.

The winner of the Berkeley Regional moves on to Tulsa, Oklahoma, where they will face the winner of the TCU Regional.
