CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Army West Point men's track and field teams had a number of podium finishes on Saturday at the Lou Onesty/Milton G. Abramson Invitational hosted by Virginia. Sophomore Lee Bares performance in the Pole Vault highlighted the day, as he won his fifth straight meet while setting a meet record with a 5.16 meter-best. The previous meet best was 5.15 meters.
The Black Knights had to face adverse weather conditions, competing in 40 degree weather with wind gusts up to 25 miles per hour.
"We scheduled this meet thinking we could escape the winter weather that's typical of the northeast and hoping to get some warm weather and sunshine, and what we got was cold and wind," said Army Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Mike Smith. "But what we got was miserable weather but our kids competed well."
The men's quartet of Junior Jose Santana, freshman Ben Sims, freshman Kevin Dyer, and sophomore Tyler Davis placed first in the 4x100 Meter Relay with a time of 40.98 a week after setting a program record in the event versus Navy.
The hurdle events went well for the Black Knights as senior Taylor Andrews placed second in the 110 Meter Hurdles (14.55), losing by just a hundredth of a second to Virginia's Charles Bowman. Army then swept the top three spots in the 400 meter hurdles. Senior Marcus Phillips (54.19) paced the way with junior Nick Beavers (55.12) and sophomore Kevin Hall (55.46) following.
Three other Cadets provided podium placements as junior Trevor Touchton won the 800 Meter with a time of 1:54.04, Stevyn Spees took second in the 400 Meter finishing in 49.21, and sophomore Nickolas Causey finished third in the 1500 meter run at 3:58.64.
"We were competitive on the men's side and we came in expecting to perform well and we did," said Smith.
Army will compete next at the Bucknell Outdoor Classic from April 15-16.
