PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – The Army West Point women's track and field team had a quality showing to open the Penn Relays, including a victory from the Distance Medley team.
The trio of freshman Cassie Mundekis, Payton Padgett, and Abby Halbrook teamed with senior team captain Haley Winters to post an 11:46.91 time to finish first. However, Army Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith thinks the quartet could perform better.
"I think we underperformed," said Smith. "We can run much faster than we did and our inexperience showed. I know that is sounds like sour grapes given that we won the race, but we need to continue to elevate our expectations of this group of plebes."
The Black Knights successful day carried over to the field events. Sophomore Briyah Brown placed fifth in the shot put (14.14 meters) while fellow classmate Meagan Hilla hit a season-high mark for Army in the high jump, reaching 1.67 meters to place 14th in the event.
"Meagan Hilla had a nice season-best in the high jump today in some pretty ugly weather," stated Smith. "It is encouraging when people improve in situations that are challenging."
Senior Cody Rothschild added a top ten finish in the discus throw as she placed 10th with a top throw of 43.05 meters.
The Cadets return to action for the second day of the Penn Relays tomorrow morning as both the men and women will be competing.
