April 22, 2016 | Men's Lacrosse
BALTIMORE – Loyola scored five goals, including four-straight in the second quarter and came away with the 12-6 win over the 20th-ranked Army West Point men's lacrosse team on Friday night in the final night of the regular season.
The Black Knights (8-5, 5-3 PL) will enter the Patriot League Tournament as the fourth seed and will host fifth-seeded Lehigh on Tuesday night at Michie Stadium. The No. 9/11 Greyhounds earned the bye into the Patriot League Semifinals as the second seed.
Jimbo Moore led the way for Army with two goals, while Cole Johnson had three assists to extend his point-scoring streak to 33 games. AJ Barretto finished with eight stops in the cage.
Loyola (10-3, 7-1 PL) saw Zach Herreweyers tally five goals, while Pat Spencer chipped in with six points on two goals and four assists. Goalie Jacob Stover was terrific with 11 saves.
The Greyhounds came out strong in the first quarter and gained a 3-1 advantage. The game plan early on was to bleed the clock down to the 30-second timer and it worked out for them as two of their first three goals came with the timer on. Loyola saw three different players find the net and Spencer led the way with two points. Dan Grabher had Army's lone goal of the opening frame with an assist from Max Kreig as it came off a faceoff.
Army sliced the Loyola advantage down to 4-3 by scoring two of the first three goals of the second quarter. Nate Jones got it started in the second frame with his 33rd tally of the season, while Connor Cook added Army's third goal of the night. Loyola answered with a four-goal run to make it 8-3 with 3:19 remaining in the opening half. Moore stopped the run with a great shot from the outside and the teams went into the break with the Greyhounds leading 8-4.
The momentum stayed with the Greyhounds in the third quarter as they built their lead up to 11-4 with three-straight goals to start the second half. Moore stopped the run with his second of the day with a nice move and shot to beat Stover to make 11-5 at the end of three quarters.
Ted Glesener scored the lone Army goal of the fourth quarter with a man-up tally with an assist to Johnson, but the Spencer finished off the game with his second of the night and Loyola came away with the 12-6 win.
