Softball Splits Doubleheader with Raiders
April 02, 2016 | Softball
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Army West Point softball team split its doubleheader with Colgate Saturday afternoon. The Raiders took game one 2-1, but the Black Knights bounced back in game two to down Colgate 7-4. Sunday's rubber game has been postponed due to the impending weather in the area.
The Cadets now own a 20-13 mark on the season and improved to 4-1 in Patriot League play. With today's win, head coach Michelle DePolo increased her career-total to 199, just one shy of the 200 win milestone. It is also the eighth-straight season that the Black Knights have tallied at least 20 wins, seven of which have been during DePolo's tenure.
"I think the weather conditions had a bit of an emotional and physical impact on the game today," said DePolo. "A rain delay after less than half an inning, one that brought in high winds blowing in, a much lower temperature and then snow to finish off certainly provided additional elements to a game."
Army jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in game one versus Colgate (4-16). Kasey McCravey was walked right off the bat and stole second to put the Black Knights into scoring position. A sacrifice bunt by Mae Wadyka moved McCravey to third before Rashenskas hit her home with help by an error by the Raiders.
Colgate tied the score up, 1-1, in the home half of the first fueled by an RBI single up the middle by Geranen after a rain delay. Neither team was able to convert runs in the next four innings keeping the score in a 1-1 deadlock.
The Raiders would score the game winning run in the bottom of the fifth and the Cadets would not advance into scoring position in the next two innings.
"The game was pretty similar for both teams in game one, they just had a few hits that landed and we hit the ball right at someone," explained DePolo. "It was interesting to see Leuter start game two in the circle because we had debriefed on some things we could have done differently game one; but seeing her again to start game two gave us the opportunity."
The Black Knights jumped out to another 1-0 lead in the first inning of the second game of the doubleheader. McCravey hit a home run past the center field fence. Army denied Colgate from scoring for the next three innings, and didn't let the Raiders get into scoring position once during that span.
Army scored run number two in the top of the fourth inning when Gladys Esparza-Gallegos advanced to third off a hit by Maddie Kim then ran home off an error by the Raiders.
Colgate brought the score to 2-1 when it scored its first run of the game off an RBI single up the middle. The Black Knights bounced back in the next inning and notched three more runs.
McCravey singled up the right side to get on base in the fifth. Alee Rashsnekas' single to left field then advanced her into scoring position. A single to the left side by Emily Gray advanced McCravey home to put Army up 3-1.
Esparza-Gallegos stroked a two RBI single up the middle allowing Tyler McKinney and Rashenskas to score padding the Cadets' lead 5-1. A double by the Raiders in the bottom half of the inning cut the Black Knights' lead to 5-3.
Rashenskas knocked a single down the right field line in the top of the sixth to help secure Army's win. Hailey Megge and McCravey scored on the play putting the Cadets up 7-3. The Raiders had one last rally in the bottom of the seventh with one run, but Army's defense prevented them from a comeback.
Esparza-Gallegos and Rashenskas each had two RBI in today's doubleheader, and Rashenskas went a perfect four-for-four in game two. McCravey and Gray also tallied an RBI apiece. Renee Poirier earned the win from the circle today to improve her record to 3-5 with five strikeouts.
"I was really proud of how we responded and started off game two very strong and kept pushing the entire time," said DePolo. "Kasey is a huge tone setter for us especially when we bat first. I thought it was a huge play to face hit a leaf off homerun versus the same pitcher that had just held us to one run in an entire game."
