Goalie Duel Goes to Bucknell
April 02, 2016 | Men's Lacrosse
WEST POINT, N.Y. – In a goalie duel at Michie Stadium on Saturday, the No. 15/16 Army West Point men's lacrosse team fell shy against Bucknell by an 8-7 decision.
Christian Klipstein of Bucknell and Army's rookie AJ Barretto were the story in this afternoon's game.
Klipstein finished with 14 saves, including eight in the second half, while Barretto stopped a season-high 12 saves. He had seven in the first half.
"They played a zone around him and they wanted him to take the main roll for them and he was certainly up for the task," head coach Joe Alberici said about Klipstein's effort this afternoon. "I also see that we had a number of opportunities, but we need to do a better job of changing levels. I don't want to take anything away from Christian, he was terrific today."
The Black Knights (7-3, 4-1 PL) were led by Ted Glesener, who tallied two goals. Cole Johnson and Jimbo Moore posted multi-point games with a goal and an assist apiece.
The Bison (6-4, 3-3 PL) got three points from Tommy O'Connor with a goal and two assists. Quinn Collison and Sean Doyle posted two goals each. O'Connor's tally with 2:39 gave Bucknell an 8-6 lead and the Bison held on for the 8-7 win.
Army gained a two-goal lead with 6:28 remaining with goals from Glancy and Glesener, but Bucknell answered with the next two to tie the game early in the second quarter at 2-2. Doyle and Thomas Flibotte were the goal scorers for the visitors.
The teams then traded goals with Glesener scoring a man-up goal with 3:45 left in the first half, but Reed Malas responded to tie the game for the second time at 3-3 with only four seconds on the clock before the half.
Just like the first half, Army was able to start out with the opening two goals with Dalton MacAfee scoring his third goal of the season, ending what seemed to be a long stretch without a goal as the goaltenders took over the game. Moore scored an incredible goal with 6:28 left in the third. He ducked past two defenders and shot a behind-the-back shot that beat Klipstein to put Army on top 5-3.
Bucknell answered the amazing goal with a run of four in a row, which gave the Bison a 7-5 lead with 8:46 on the clock in the fourth quarter. Collison had two of the four goals on the run, while Will Sands and Doyle added the two other tallies.
Johnson ended a 19-minute scoreless drought for Army with his 28th of the year to cut the lead to 7-6, but O'Connor put the game out of reach with 2:39 remaining.
Army did have a chance down the stretch with David Symmes scoring on a bounce shot with 14 seconds left, setting up a huge faceoff. Bucknell won the draw on a violation by Army and ran out the clock for an 8-7 win.
Army was outshot by the Bison with Bucknell owning a 34-32 advantage. The Bison won 12-of-19 faceoffs. The Black Knights won the ground ball battle by a 29-21 margin. Austin Schultz led the defensive unit with four caused turnovers and two ground balls.
The Black Knights head back out on the road next week with a tilt at Boston University at 1 p.m. on April 9.
