American Slides Past Women’s Lacrosse, 12-9

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's lacrosse team outscored American by a goal in the second half, but was unable to over a four-goal halftime deficit during a 12-9 setback in Patriot League action on Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium.
Army drops to 5-9 overall and 0-6 in the Patriot League, while American improves to 5-10 and 2-5.
Freshman Izzy McMahon scored a season-high four goals for the Black Knights while also coming away with two draw controls. Junior Erin Jollota added a pair of tallies, and sophomores Rachel Hornick and Amy Johnston, and freshman Kelsea Krauss all found the back of the net once.
Freshman goalkeeper Kayla Rowley posted six saves on the afternoon, including four in the opening half.
"We fought hard and I think we played American really well," said head coach Kristen Waagbo. "We played one of our best performances today. We had some individuals who stepped up and did well, but we just dug ourselves into a deep hole in that first eight minutes. From then on, I was really proud of our performance, but we have to figure out how to come out stronger."
Jennifer DeSimone and Jessica Wojciechowski netted four goals apiece for American, while DeSimone also contributed three assists to finish the day with seven points. Olivia Mangan and Shauna Norris both added two markers, and Fiona Geier registered seven saves.
The Eagles opened up a four-goal lead just 7:56 into the contest, with DeSimone and Wojciechowski each adding two goals. McMahon got one back for the Black Knights at the 12:06 mark, but American struck for two more tallies in the next 3:27 to extend its advantage to 6-1.
Jollota scored the final goal of the first half, with 4:21 remaining until halftime, to send Army into the locker room down 6-2.
The teams traded the first six goals to begin the second period, as American maintained its four-goal cushion before Army netted five of the next six goals to cut the deficit to one, 10-9, with 6:50 remaining.
McMahon tallied two of her goals during the stretch, while Hornick, Johnston and Jollota also scored.
The Black Knights wouldn't come any closer though, as the Eagles finished the game with two markers in the final 4:20 to come away with the three-goal victory.
Army is back at Michie Stadium for the final time this season, when it hosts Colgate on Wednesday, April 20 at 4 p.m.
