Softball Hosts Lehigh for Patriot League Battle

WEST POINT, NY. – The Army West Point softball team returns to the banks of the Hudson for a three-game series against Patriot League rival Lehigh April 16-17. The Black Knights, who are second in league standings, will host the top-ranked Mountain Hawks for a doubleheader on Saturday with the first game beginning at 1 p.m. Army and Lehigh will square-off for the third game of the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday.

PROGRAM • Army vs. Lehigh
Army went 2-1 against Bucknell over the weekend to improve to 24-14 on the season and 6-2 in the Patriot League. The team's doubleheader with St. Peter's Tuesday was postponed due to rescheduling conflicts for the Peacocks.
Alee Rashenskas led the Black Knights with a .421 batting average through the five games as she went 8-for-19 last week. The junior totaled three runs and five RBI. Rashenskas stroked a team-high three doubles and totaled 11 bases.
Renee Poirier picked up two wins on the rubber last week and a save for Army. The freshman pitcher threw a career-high nine strikeouts in game two versus Yale and totaled 14 on the week. Poirier held her opponents to a .182 batting average and had an ERA of 1.87.
The Black Knights were ahead 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh against Bucknell with the bases loaded and no outs. Poirier stepped into the circle with the tying run at the plate and threw a strikeout before a double-play got Army out of the jam to secure the freshman's eighth save of the season.
Caroline Smith was also impressive in the circle with a 0.38 ERA through 18.2 innings pitched. She earned the hard luck loss in the nine inning 1-0 deficit to Bucknell Sunday, but threw eight strikeouts and allowed one earned run.
Lehigh is coming off a 1-1 split with Manhattan. The Mountain Hawks dropped the first game to the Jaspers, 4-3, before defeating Manhattan, 4-3. Lehigh stands at 29-9 on the season. Morgan Decker leads the Mountain Hawks and the league with a .454 batting average and 31 RBI.
