Baseball Begins League Play Against Lafayette

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point baseball team opens conference play this weekend with a four-game series against Lafayette at Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field. The Black Knights host the Leopards in consecutive weekend doubleheaders beginning on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
The first game of each day will be a seven-inning contest, followed by a traditional nine-inning affair in the nightcap.
The Black Knights bring a 9-14 record into the weekend, while Lafayette owns a 6-14 mark through 20 non-conference games, 16 of which were played away from home.
Army now has five offensive players with a batting average above .300, led by junior shortstop Kris Lindner at .333. John McCarthy is hitting at a .325 clip and Alex Dickerson has a .314 average in 35 at-bats. Utility man Jon Rosoff (.305) and catcher Keegan Vega (.302) have each been locked in at the plate recently and over Army's last 12 games Vega is hitting .414 and Rosoff owns a .364 average over his last 10 contests.
Steven Cohen leads Lafayette with a .382 batting average, a .461 on-base percentage, 19 RBI and nine doubles. Cohen is a threat on the base paths and has been successful on 6-of-7 attempts. Michael Coniglio, the reigning Patriot League Player of the Week, is hitting .321 with a team-best 18 runs scored and leads the Patriot League with 11 stolen bases.
On the mound, junior David Bednar headlines the Lafayette pitching staff. Bednar holds a 3.62 ERA, with 30 strikeouts over 27 1/3 innings and has held his opposition to a .210 average.
Last season, the Leopards swept the four-game series against Army in Easton, Pa.
