Lafayette Takes Conference Opener From Baseball
April 02, 2016 | Baseball
WEST POINT, N.Y. – David Bedner threw a seven-inning complete-game shutout and Dan Leckie hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning to help Lafayette top the Army West Point baseball team 4-0 in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Johnson Stadium at Doubleday Field.
The loss drops Army to 9-15 on the year, while Lafayette improved to 7-14 overall in the Patriot League opener for both teams.
Bednar allowed four hits, struck out 10 and walked one to improve to 3-1 on the season. Kris Lindner singled and doubled for Army in the loss, while Stu Schley and Justin Reece added singles.
Lafayette got its first two baserunners on to start the game against Army starting pitcher Matt Ball, but the Black Knights' right-hander struck out Campbell Lipe looking to strand two.
Army had two runners on in the bottom of the first against Bednar, but cleanup hitter Jon Rosoff grounded into a double-play to end the frame.
The Leopards pushed their first run across on an RBI single to right field by Andrew Landolfi in the top of the second and the score held there until Leckie's two-run shot increased Lafayette's lead to 3-0 three innings later.
Bednar gained steam as the game progressed and struck out two Army hitters in both the fourth and fifth innings. The right-hander worked around a leadoff walk to Lindner in the top of the sixth, but a 5-4-3 double play ended the inning and kept Army scoreless.
Ball (2-4) was replaced by rookie reliever Mike Gagliardi after 6.1 innings on the mound. The Army starter allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts and three walks. Gagliardi retired the two Lafayette batters he faced to end the seventh, but Army was unable to capitalize on Reece's pinch-hit single in its final trip to the plate.

Game Notes: The start of the game was pushed back due to rain … first pitch was 2:15 … Army wore its white jerseys with white pants and black caps.
