Men’s Tennis Sweeps Two Conference Foes on Saturday

WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Army West Point men's tennis team opened Patriot League play with two victories early on Saturday. The Black Knights defeated Lafayette 6-1 before sweeping Holy Cross 7-0. Army has now won seven straight matches and stands at 12-6 this spring. Lafayette is 1-8 on the year and the Crusaders have lost all three of their contests.
Senior and team captain Caison Best made his on-court debut this spring against the Crusaders. He paired with freshman Grant Patterson for a 6-4 conquest in the third doubles position.
Junior Sam Lampman earned his first two wins in the top singles slot this season with a 6-0, 6-1 win versus Brian Stefanowicz of Lafayette and then topped Michael Varda of Holy Cross 6-2, 6-1.
Lampman teamed with Nguyen in the latter match as the two improved to 5-0 with a 6-0 victory.
Junior Grant Riechmann extended his team-best singles winning streak versus Lafayette to four straight. His 6-3, 6-0 win over Gavin Studner in the second singles slot moves his record to 5-1 in that position and 8-7 this spring.
Sophomore Daniel Zheng also played for the first time in 2016. He defeated Rich DeGregoris of the Crusaders 6-4, 6-0.
The Black Knights will now enjoy nearly two weeks off before taking on non-conference opponents Marist and Hartford on Thursday, April 7. The match with the Red Foxes will be on the road while the battle with the Hawks is set to be at Malek Courts in West Point, N.Y.
