Men’s Tennis Splits Thursday Matches

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's tennis team played a pair of non-conference games on Thursday evening and split the two contests. The Black Knights topped Hartford 4-0 before losing to Marist 4-3. The Cadets are now 13-7 this season while the Hawks fall to 0-8 and the Red Foxes move to 9-3 on the year.
Army captured the doubles point against Hartford behind victories from the teams of Michael Sienko and Grant Patterson and David Proctor and Joey Hatala in the first and third positions, respectively. Hatala and Patterson went on to secure wins in singles as well, with it being the first singles victory of the spring for Hatala. The Black Knights clinched the match when Morgan Hale was victorious in the fifth singles position by a score of 6-2, 6-2.
Marist started the latter match by taking the doubles point with a clean sweep but Kyle Barnes and David Mitchell lost only 7-5 in the second doubles slot while Sam Lampman and Michael Nguyen lost for the first time this spring in six matches together. That match in the third doubles flight came by the narrow margin of 7-6 in favor of the Red Foxes.
The Black Knights battled back in singles with victories from Nguyen and Barnes in the fourth and fifth singles flights, respectively.
Army pushed three other singles matches into a third set. Lampman played an incredibly close match with Marist's top player, Rudolf Kurz. After dropping the first set 6-3, Lampman pieced together a 7-5 second set win to earn a third set. Kurz then finished a 6-3 victory in the final frame over the senior Cadet.
The Black Knights will be back in action next Friday when they host Lehigh. That match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
