Women’s Lacrosse Drops League Opener to Lafayette

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's lacrosse team fell back to .500 on the season after dropping its Patriot League opener to Lafayette, 17-4, on Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium.
Army slips to 4-4 overall and 0-1 in the Patriot League, while Lafayette improves to 4-4 and 1-0.
Sophomore Rachel Hornick and freshman Nikki Polhamus each scored twice, while freshman Amelia Gabrovic added an assist. Freshman Kayla Rowley stopped three shots in the defeat.
Lafayette was led by Kirsten Wilhelmsen's four goals and three assists and Carlianne McCabe's game-high five goals. Anna Raymond finished with one save to come away with the victory.
Hornick scored just 10 seconds into the contest to give the Black Knights an early 1-0 advantage, but Wilhelmsen netted back-to-back free-position goals 45 seconds apart to put the Leopards ahead, 2-1, at the 26:24 mark of the opening half.
The sides traded the game's next four goals as Lafayette maintained its one-goal lead, 4-3, with 7:52 to play before halftime. Included during that stretch was Polhamus' first marker of the afternoon that she bounced past Raymond to make the score 2-2.
The visitors held a 2-1 scoring advantage during the last 6:34 of the period and entered the break with a 6-4 lead.
Wilhelmsen scored twice in the first 6:29 of the second half to begin a stretch of 11 unanswered goals for the Leopards in the second frame. McCabe added three of her five tallies of the game in the second half.
The Black Knights are back on the field on Tuesday, March 22, when they host Howard in a nonconference tilt at 4 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Saturday's game marked Army's first-ever Patriot League contest … freshman Emily Turrini entered the game as a reserve goalkeeper, with the appearance coming as the first of her career … Amelia Gabrovic's assist was the first point of her collegiate career.
