Men’s Track Wins Anteater Four-Way
March 13, 2016 | Men's Track and Field
IRVINE, Calif. – The Army West Point men's track and field team captured its first title of the spring season with a 64-point performance at UC Irvine's Anteater Four-Way on Saturday. It is the second-consecutive year the Black Knights have won this meet.
"I thought the meet went pretty well today," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "We came out here to get good weather and develop a level of consistency in our training. We saw solid opening marks pretty much across the board."
The Black Knights blew away the competition with Long Beach State posting just 39 points while host UC Irvine earned 34 points.
Army had five individual champions on the day, starting in the 4x100 relay team of Jose Santana, Ben Sims, Kevin Dyer and Tyler Davis. The group completed the spring in 41.21. The 4x400 relay yielded a second-place finish with Marcus Denham, Trevor Touchton, Stevyn Spees and Santana.
Touchton took the crown in the 1500m run that was dominated by Cadets. He ran a 3:54.26 as he was trailed by Nick Causey in second, Tom Girardot in third, Mitch Dutton in fifth, Ben Boswell in sixth and Johnny Valeri in seventh. The spread from Valeri to Touchton was 3.23 seconds.
The early success continued into the 110m hurdles as Taylor Andrews captured the crown with a time of 14.37. Ross Puritty placed third at 14.92.
Jeff Giannettino won the high jump after clearing the 2.03m bar, and Lee Bares continues to win pole vault events. He vaulted over the 5.20m bar to capture the event's title.
Army will remain in the Golden State for another week before taking part in the UC Irvine Spring Break Invitational March 18-19.
