WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point men's track and field team travels to Irvine, Calif., for a pair of meets to open its 2016 spring season. The Black Knights will begin at UC Irvine's Anteater Four-Way on Saturday and will stay in the Golden State for the annual UC Irvine Spring Break Invitational on March 18-19.
Army is coming off a third-place finish at the Patriot League Indoor Championships in which three Cadets were individual champions. Senior Stevyn Spees set the pace in the 500-meter dash, finishing the race at 1:03.64. Sophomore Lee Bares posted the best mark of the competition in the pole vault at 5.10 meters. Freshman Ben Sims captured his first 60-meter dash championship with a time of 6.79 in the finals. His 6.75 in the prelims set an Academy record.
The Black Knights won last season's Spring Break Invitational, beating out North Arizona, host UC Irvine, Utah State, Loyola Marymount, UC Riverside, Navy and Pepperdine in that order.
