Men’s Track Falls to Navy in Annapolis
February 06, 2016 | Men's Track and Field
ANNAPOLIS, Md. – The Army West Point men's track and field team fell to Navy on the road 107-74 at Wesley A. Brown Field House on Saturday.
"We were soundly defeated by a better team," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "We have some talented guys on our team, but Navy has more talent and is able to spread their depth around in ways that we can't. We are focused on the process, and that will eventually lead to where we want to be. Despite today's loss, I still feel like we are headed in the right direction."
The Black Knights won four events on the day. Sophomore Lee Bares captured the first of those in the pole vault with a vault of 5.10 meters. Freshman Ben Sims also saw success in the field events, taking first in the long jump with a leap of 7.15 meters, shattering his previous personal best of 6.78 meters from last week's Armory Invite.
Seniors Stevyn Spees and Mitch Dutton also captured victories in the middle distance races. Spees won the 500-meter dash and set a new career-best with a time of 1:03.65. The senior from Columbus, Ohio, climbed into Army's top-10 all-time in the event ranking seventh. Dutton collected his victory in the 800-meter run after crossing the finish line at 1:52.18, cutting down his career-best time by nearly three seconds.
Army returns to action next Saturday, Feb. 13, as the Black Knights split their squad for the second time in three weeks. A portion of the team will travel to Boston for BU's Valentine's Invitational while the rest of the team travels to New York City for the Millrose Games.
