Loyola Edges Men’s Basketball in Double Overtime

WEST POINT, N.Y. – Dylan Cox's three-pointer at the end of regulation sent the game to overtime, but Loyola Maryland prevailed 100-99 in double overtime on Saturday afternoon at Christl Arena.
The loss dropped Black Knights to 4-8 in Patriot League play and 13-11 on the season. Loyola improved to 8-15 overall and 7-5 in conference play.
Tanner Plomb led four Black Knights in double figures in the scoring column with 25 points, while Kyle Wilson added 22. Kevin Ferguson posted a double-double for the second straight game of 17 points and equaled his career high with 14 rebounds. Dylan Cox also registered a double-double with 17 points and 10 boards. Cox also handed out a game-high five assists.
Loyola had three players in double digits as Andre Walker scored 31, including a 15-of-16 effort at the line, Jarred Jones put in 28 points and Franz Rassman contributed 13 and a team-high eight rebounds. As a team, Loyola shot 31-of-37 at the free throw line and 34-of-72 from the field (47.2 percent).
Army won the rebounding battle 53-47, but was held to 37.8 percent shooting (31-of-82) and was 29-for-40 at the charity stripe. The contest featured 19 ties and 11 lead changes.
"It's unfortunate," head coach Zach Spiker said. "The guys played hard and we have to keep playing hard. This is a batch of adversity we never anticipated with this group and they are going to have to show some resolve that they haven't shown so far."
The first separation either side saw was a 6-0 spurt by Loyola that put the visitors ahead 18-14 midway through the opening half and prompted Army to call timeout. After the brief break, Army scored twice inside, a layup by Ferguson and a transition bucket by Kennedy Edwards to tie the game back up at 18-18.
Following a layup by Ferguson, Loyola scored nine of the next 11 points to secure a 31-22 advantage with 4:15 to play. Tyler Hubbard capped the run with a wing three and Jones scored four during the stretch.
Army countered with the next eight points, four at the line and baskets underneath by Plomb and Wilson, to pull within a point with a minute left. James Fives' layup in traffic ended the run, before Wilson's nifty layup went down.
A putback by Cox closed the half as Army's 12-3 run knotted the score at 34-34 at intermission. Ferguson had a double-double at the break of 11 points and 10 rebounds as Army held a 24-17 edge on the boards. Turnovers hurt the Black Knights in the period, with nine to Loyola's six, and the Greyhounds shot 51.9 percent from the floor (14-of-27). Army was at 40.0 percent (14-of-35).
Loyola pulled in front 41-36 in the opening minutes of the second half before a 9-2 run for the Black Knights put them back in the lead at 45-43. Wilson knocked down an open triple to ignite the offense before Luke Morrison, Ferguson and John Emezie added two apiece. A free throw and a fastbreak three by Plomb courtesy of Cox extended the run to 13-2 and forced Loyola to call timeout. The Black Knights led 49-43 at the 14-minute mark.
The visitors drew within a point on consecutive layups by Jones, before Edwards used a baby hook shot in the paint to push the Army lead to 56-53 as the game approached the halfway point of the second half.
Loyola edged in front (57-56) with two Walker free throws and a three-point play by Rassman, but the lead was short-lived as Ferguson made two free throws on Army's ensuring possession. A miss by Jones led to a corner three by Larry Toomey and Army seized control at 61-57 with less than eight minutes remaining.
The Black Knights' cushion increased to eight points, their largest of the game, as Wilson hit a three, Ferguson put in a layup and Toomey added a free throw as part of a 10-2 Army push. Walker's layup halted the run at 5:51 before Jones made two at the charity stripe to cut the lead to 67-63. An Army turnover gave the ball back to Loyola and Jones capitalized with a baseline spin and lay-in to make it a two-point game.
Walker was sent to the line with two minutes left and hit both free throws to tie the score at 71. Plomb answered with a pullup from the foul line the next time down before a three-point play by Chancellor Barnard gave Loyola a 74-73 lead.
Neither team scored on their next two possessions and Walker was fouled with 24.8 seconds on the clock. He hit both and Plomb got a floater in the paint to go down with 13.5 seconds left. Walker was fouled again and pushed the lead back to three points before Cox's three off the glass sent the game to overtime tied at 78.
Tied at 80 a minute into the first overtime, Wilson put home a pullup three late in the shot clock. Then, Army lead was 83-82 after Jones made two free throws. Cox got to the line and pushed Army back ahead by three before Walker hit two free throws after Ferguson fouled out with 2:32 showing.
Jones fouled out with 1:15 to go and Edwards made 1-of-2 at the line before Rassman's tip in tied the game at 86 with a minute left. Wilson scored a scoop layup and Walker answered to tie the game at 88 with less than 30 seconds to play in the first overtime. Army had a number of chances inside to win the game on its final possession, but it couldn't convert and the game headed to a second overtime.
Cox made two free throws after being fouled on a Loyola turnover and Army's lead was 91-88 at 3:50. Plomb then drove and scored with the right hand to extend the lead to 93-88 after another Greyhounds giveaway. Walker put in two free throws and the Army lead was three at 3:15.
Barnard's follow trimmed the advantage to 93-92 with two minutes left. Wilson was fouled on a drive and made one-of-two at 1:34. Rassman scored on Loyola's ensuing trip and Army called for time with the game tied at 94 and 59.3 seconds on the clock.
Out of the timeout, Army went to Plomb and he converted a three-point play with a leaner off the glass to make it 97-94. A quick layup from Hubbard and a timeout by the Greyhounds allowed them to set up a full-court press with 24 seconds remaining. A steal and quick score by Rassman made it 98-97 Loyola before Cox and Walker each converted two free throws on opposite ends. Army was down a point with less than four seconds to play and Plomb's 27-footer at the buzzer was off.
Army next plays on Monday evening when it hosts Colgate at Christl Arena at 7:30 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network.
