Women’s Track Embarks for Navy

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's track and field team travels to Annapolis, Md., for its annual indoor Star Meet with service academy rival Navy on Saturday, Feb. 6, from Wesley A. Brown Field House.
"It's always a big week and a fun week going into the Navy meet," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "It brings a lot of energy to practice with the anticipation, and I think as an athlete and a coach that's what you want. You want to have a rivalry and a competition that matters, and this dual matters in a way that no other competition between two schools does."
The Black Knights are looking to continue the recent trend as they have won two of the last three meets. The women downed the Mids in last year's indoor meet, 94-87, snapping Navy's 11-meet win streak that included six indoor victories.
Army's 2015-16 roster is highlighted by its ambitious youth, as well as a few seasoned veterans to guide them. All five weekly awards on the season have been won by freshmen Cadets.
"We've had some great marks from our women in the throwing events," added Smith. "I anticipate that will be a nice, competitive battle. Across the board on the track, we've had some solid performances both in the sprints and the distances. It will be fun to watch because of the tight time schedule and the talent level on both sides."
Cassie Mundekis captured a pair of Patriot League and ECAC Rookie of the Week accolades for her performances in the first week of December and February, respectively. In December, the Manito, Ill., native set Army's fifth-best mark in the 1000-meter run with a time of 2:55.62 and broke the program's 20-year record in the 800-meter run of 2:11.10 with a mark of 2:10.95 in February.
Abby Halbrook was recognized as the Patriot League Rookie of the Week on Jan. 25, following her 4:56.51 performance at the Joe Donahue Games, the fourth-best mark in program history.
The women's meet is scheduled to begin at 2:30 p.m. following the men's, which will start at 11 a.m.
