Softball Suffers Setback to Cal Poly
February 20, 2016 | Softball
CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. – In the first game of the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic, the Army West Point softball team suffered a 7-3 setback to Cal Poly.
"Tonight's games were just flat out exciting, well played games," said head coach Michelle DePolo. "Despite the score in game one, the team really put the bat on the ball very well. We've got to tip our hat to Cal Poly as they played out of their minds on defense. All day long this hard ground has been causing defensive miscues for every team and they robbed us of every well hit ball possible from bunts, to hard slaps on the ground, line drives, Texas leaguers and long balls. We still made fantastic offensive adjustments and peppered around their ace, who is a very impressive pitcher. Their hits fell where we were not and we are working on eliminating that one big hit. Overall, it was a great igniter into game two.
"Game two was all about executing on their plays. We started off the first inning by being walked twice, and never looked back. Kristen pitched great to a free swinging team who has proved they will put runs on the board. Our defense did very well behind her and made every possible out they could."
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the third inning when the Mustangs (5-2) scored a run with an RBI up the right field line. Army (1-6) shutdown Cal Poly in the fourth with help from a double play by Caroline Smith.
Smith caught a line drive to the circle then threw the ball to Nena Riccoboni at first for the double play. Ashley Yoo made the next out by catching a fly ball to center field keeping the score at 1-0 in favor of Cal Poly.
Neither team was able to convert a score in the fourth inning, but the Mustangs tallied four during the home half of the fifth fueled by a three-run homerun by Hyland.
Army gained some momentum at the top of the sixth when Smith stroked an RBI single to left center allowing Kasey McCravey to score. Gladys Esparza-Gallegos then hit a two-run double to right center with Smith and McPeek scoring for the Black Knights cutting the Mustangs' lead to 5-3.
Cal Poly was able to put two more on the board due to an RBI and fielding error. At the top of the seventh, the Mustangs earned three-straight outs to close-out the game at 7-3.
Esparza-Gallegos led Army with two RBIs, while Smith had one. McPeek, Smith and Esparza-Gallegos each had a double in the loss.
The Black Knights will face Loyola-Marymount (11:30 p.m. (ET)) tonight for the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic at the Big League Dream Complex in Cathedral City, Calif.
Army will be back in action on Saturday with a game versus the Razorbacks at 3 p.m. (ET) and one opposite the Wolverines at 8 p.m. (ET), also at the Big League Dream Complex. All games at the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic will be streamed for fans by FloSoftball for a small fee.
