WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army lacrosse team fought to the end against the Scarlet Knights, but two late goals from Rutgers earned the visitors the 13-11 win on Saturday afternoon at Michie Stadium.
Army (1-1) was led by Cole Johnson, who finished with four points on two goals and two assists, while Connor Cook chipped in with a hat trick. Rookie Nate Jones had two goals for the Black Knights and Jimbo Moore recorded two points with a goal and an assist.
Goalie AJ Barretto was solid in net with 11 saves in his second career start.
Rutgers (2-0) led for most of the game and allowed Army to take the lead late in the fourth quarter, but responded. Adam Charalambides had a five-point day with four goals and an assist, while Jules Heningburg tallied a hat Trick. Max Edelmann finished with 11 saves to equal his counterpart with eight of those saves coming in the first half.
It was a goalie duel early on, but Rutgers broke the ice with two goals by Charalambides and Heningburg to give the Scarlet Knights the 2-0 advantage. Army answered with Shea Mullins and Cole Johnson burying back-to-back goals to tie the game with 1:07 left in the first quarter.
Rutgers bounced back with Ryan Cunningham going coast-to-coast to regain the lead with 14 seconds left. It didn't take long for Army to get that one back as Dan Grabher won his sixth faceoff of the quarter and beat Edelmann in seven seconds to even the game at 3-3 at the end of the first quarter.
The Scarlet Knights regained the momentum in the second quarter and went on a 3-0 run to head into halftime with a 6-3 advantage. Heninburg scored his second of the day in that quarter with Casey Rose and Zack Sikura contributing with tallies as well.
The second half was a scoring fest with 15 goals in the last two quarters between the two teams. The Scarlet Knights picked up where they left off in the first half with Charalambides giving Rutgers a four-goal advantage. The Black Knights fought back with three-straight to make it a one-goal game at 7-6. Cook had two of the three tallies, while Moore netted his lone goal of the game with 4:04 left in the third quarter

Charalambides answered the run with his third of the day with 49 seconds left, and the Scarlet Knights regained a two-goal advantage going into the fourth quarter.
The fireworks exploded in the final quarter with each team scoring five goals. The team traded tallies in the first 6:20 of the frame. Army tied the game at 8-8 with Jones scoring a man-up, while Cook completed the hat trick with 12:22 remaining. Rutgers answered with two of the next three goals and had a 10-9 advantage with 7:40 on the clock.
The Black Knights earned their first lead of the game with 5:56 left on back-to-back goals from Cook and Nick Santorelli. The second tally was a man-up goal with an assist from Ted Glesener, and Army led 11-10.
However, the Scarlet Knights stayed composed and scored the final three goals of the game to earn the 13-11 win.
The Black Knights outshot Rutgers, 46-32, in the game. Army dominated in faceoffs with 19 wins in 28 chances. Alex Daly was 8-for-11 with three ground balls and Grabher had a goal along with 11-of-17 on faceoffs. He also picked up six ground balls.
Army has a quick turnaround with a 12 p.m. matchup against VMI tomorrow at Michie Stadium.
