DAY TWO RESULTS
ANNAPOLIS, MD. – The Army West Point women's swimming and diving team completed the first full day of competition at the Patriot League Championships Thursday. The Black Knights rank third with 167 points after three Academy were set along with a plebe record.
"We had a good second day at the championship meet," said head coach Mickey Wender. "I was very pleased with our performance this morning with a large amount of lifetime best swims. It was a great team approach and I thought we executed well. We had a few things that we didn't get right tonight, but it was a great day overall. We are in a good spot and we definitely have our opportunities as we hit day three."
The finals session began with the 500 free in which Sabrina Mortell captured an Academy record. She placed third with a time of 4:49.59 to top her career-best time of 4:52.03 which was the previous standard. Meaghan McGovern (4:59.37) and Monica Sowinski (5:00.17) placed 15th and 16th for Army.
In the 200 IM, Sidney Evans finished 10th, and during the preliminaries she recorded an Academy and plebe record time of 2:04.74. She was followed by Jess Burkett who clocked a time of 2:04.74.
"I am also proud of all of those who set records for us today," said Wender. "Jay Yang and Sidney Evans were two plebes who did a tremendous job in the 200 IM. Kelly Hamilton is racing particularly hard even though she is fighting some ailments alongside Chris Szekely who has overcome a significant injury."
Molly Mucciarone was the Black Knights' top finisher in the 50 free with a time of 23.03. The senior recorded an NCAA B-Cut time of 22.92 in the preliminary round earlier in the day. Kelly Hamilton placed sixth in the event after touching the wall in 23.33. Bailey Smith notched time of 23.74 to place 14th.
Jorie Mason competed for Army off the 1-meter. She placed 10th with a score of 190.15.
"The women are in a great battle right now and will work to fight our way back in tomorrow," added Wender. "For a team that was picked fifth in the league, I think we are doing a pretty good job. All-in-all I am pleased, we are in a good spot with a lot more swimming to go."
The Cadets closed-out the night with an Academy record performance in the 400 medley relay. The team of Hamilton, Kara Wineinger, Mucciarone and Monica Sowinski clocked a time of 3:43.89 to place second.
Army will be back in action Friday through Saturday for the rest of the Patriot League Championships.
