Women’s Basketball Cruises to Win Over Wagner

WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's basketball team capped its three-game homestand with an 85-40 victory over Wagner on Monday night at Christl Arena.
Army takes its winning streak to six games and improves to 7-1, while Wagner drops to 1-7.
Reigning Patriot League Player of the Week, sophomore Madison Hovren, notched her fourth consecutive double-double, totaling 18 points and 10 boards to go along with four steals. Junior Janae McNeal added 12 points, seven rebounds, six assists and four steals, while classmate Daizjah Morris chipped in nine points, four rebounds and three steals.
Sophomore Jess Lewis finished with eight points and juniors Margaret Anne Hubbell and Aliyah Murray tallied seven points apiece, with Murray adding six rebounds and three assists.
Julia McClure led the way for Wagner with a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double, and Kerstie Phills added 11 points and seven boards.

- The Cadets extended their home winning streak to 22 games after the victory, with their last loss at Christl Arena coming in the Patriot League semifinals against Lehigh on March 9, 2015.
- Army also improved its regular-season home winning streak to 26 games, with the Black Knights' last regular-season home defeat coming against Navy on Jan. 10, 2015.
- The Black Knights begin the season 7-1 for the second straight year.
- Army now has at least seven wins in its first eight games for the ninth time in program history.
- Hovren went 7-of-12 from the field and 4-of-4 at the free-throw line.
- Army made 17 free throws for the second game in a row, going 17-of-21 at the stripe, following a 17-for-18 performance last time out against St. Francis Brooklyn (12/3).
- The Cadets limited the Seahawks to seven points in the third quarter to mark the fewest by an Army opponent in a single quarter this season.
- Wagner's 17 points in the first half are the lowest by an Army opponent in a single half.
- Freshman Shelby Haynes added season highs of three points and five rebounds off the bench.

KEY MOMENT
- After opening to a 6-6 tie, Army closed the first quarter on an 18-3 run that gave the Black Knights a 24-9 lead at the end of one. The Cadets came away with eight steals and forced 12 turnovers in the first quarter and scored 13 of their 24 first-quarter points off Wagner turnovers.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- After both teams played to a 6-6 tie after the opening 3:52 before Army finished out the first quarter on an 18-3 run that lasted 5:45 and left the hosts with a 24-9 advantage after one.
- Murray was instrumental during Army's scoring stretch, shooting 5-of-6 from the line.
- The Black Knights came away with eight steals and forced 12 Wagner turnovers in the first period before tallying six more steals in the second.
- Hovren led the way for the Cadets in the second quarter, finishing the frame with 10 points on 4-of-4 shooting and 2-of-2 free-throw shooting.
- Army outscored Wagner, 25-8, during the second to extend its lead to 32, 49-17, by halftime.
- The Black Knights showed a strong advantage at the charity stripe during the second half, as they shot 12-of-16 at the line, while holding the Seahawks without a free-throw attempt.
- Army used an 18-7 advantage in the third period to move the score to 49-17 heading into the fourth quarter.
- The hosts used nine different players in the fourth quarter and received scoring contributions from five of them, including Dougherty, Elzinga, Haynes, Yancey and freshman Cori Schnell.

- Army is back on the road to face Minnesota on Thursday, Dec. 8 at 9 p.m. ET. The matchup will mark the first between the Black Knights and the Golden Gophers.
