RIT Explodes in Third Period to Edge Army

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – A five-goal third period fueled RIT past Army in a Friday night Atlantic Hockey contest. The Black Knights led 2-1 heading into the third, but the Tigers fired back with five unanswered goals to clinch the win.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND GAME NOTES
- Army fell to 6-4-1, 6-3-1 AHA with tonight's loss as RIT improved to 4-7-1, 4-5-0 AHA.
- For the second consecutive game, Dominic Franco was the first to strike on the night. He netted the Black Knights' first goal on the power play in the 11th minute of the game.
- It was the Cadets' first power play goal in 20 tries as they hadn't netted one since Oct. 29 at Robert Morris.
- Trevor Fidler netted Army's second power play goal of the contest off a deflection from Alex Wilkinson and Franco.
- Franco, Fidler and Wilkinson each had two points on the night for the Black Knights.
- It was the second straight game that Fidler tallied a helper, while it was Wilkinson's first career points in the Army sweater.
- It is the first time since 2014 that an opponent netted five unanswered goals in a game, and since a player on an opposing team tallied four points as Ryan Kruper and Danny Smith both notched four points on the night for the Tigers.
- The Black Knights held a 34-33 advantage in shots and were 2-of-7 on the power play compared to RIT who was 1-of-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Franco caught the RIT netminder out of position and had an open half of the net to work with as Fidler and Wilkinson assisted on the extra man goal.
- Two minutes into the second period, the Tigers tied things up at 1-1 with a wrister shot by Darren Brady.
- On the fifth power play of the night, Wilkinson fired one from the blue line which found Fidler's stick who deflected the puck into the back of the net. This pushed Army ahead to 2-1 with 9:26 left in the second stanza.
- The lead was short lived however as the Tigers scored back-to-back goals to open the third period. This pushed RIT ahead 3-2.
- The Tigers continued to excel in the third period as they netted five goals in the period at the 14, seven and three minute marks.
TURNING POINT
- RIT opened the third period with goals clocked just over a minute apart. This would begin the Tigers' five-goal third period to clinch the victory.
UP NEXT
- Army and RIT are back at the Polisseni Center tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. for the rematch. Fans can tune into the game via video, radio, livestats and Twitter updates.
