Army Puts up Fight, but Can’t Outlast American

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Army West Point volleyball team blanked Loyola 3-0 Friday night in Baltimore, Md. The Black Knights improved to 16-10 overall and 8-4 in the Patriot League with tonight's victory.

ARMY HIGHLIGHTS AND MATCH NOTES
- For the second night in a row, Carolyn Bockrath led the Black Knights in kills (nine) and hitting percentage (.467).
- Allie Strong and Vanessa Wesley each chipped in with nine kills apiece as Amber Clay added four and Olivia Fairfield tallied three, respectively.
- Haven Bethune topped the Cadets in the assists category with 19, while Nikki Lum notched 11.
- Shannel Chong had 11 digs in the loss as Clay added seven.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- American gathered momentum early in the first set and posted a 15-10 lead at the first media timeout.
- The Eagles would remain persistent and captured the set after a 10-6 run. The Black Knights fought back, but needed a few extra points to stay in it.
- Set two was all about the Cadets early on as they took a 16-12 lead. The Eagles maintained their heads though and chipped away at Army's lead to tie things up at 17-all.
- The Black Knights went ahead 24-22, but American clung on for set point and forced it to extra play and took the set 26-24 with a 4-0 run.
- In set three, the Black Knights played their best with 14 kills and limited their play to just five errors. The set remained close until the end with a 19-19 tie score before the home stretch.
- American would score two points which forced an Army timeout. The Black Knights came out of the break and brought the set back within one, but the Eagles would outscore them 4-1 to win the set, 25-21, and essentially the match.
UP NEXT
- Army returns to Gillis Field House the weekend of Nov. 4-5. The Black Knights host Lafayette Friday night and service academy rival Navy on Saturday. Both matches are set to start at 7:00 p.m.
