ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Freshman Bethany Nunnery claimed the individual title, but Navy grabbed the next six spots in taking a 20-42 victory over the Army West Point women's cross country team Saturday afternoon in the annual Star Meet as part of the Star Series sponsored by USAA.
Nunnery was the lone runner to finish under 23 minutes at the United States Naval Academy Golf Course in recording a time of 22:36.30 en route to beating the Maddie's top runner, Erin McDonnell's time of 23:03.71. She was the only freshmen to win since 2002, and the top overall winner since 2009.
Fellow freshman Andrea Karle in was the second Army runner to break into the top seven after claiming that spot in 23:42.85
ARMY'S TOP FINISHES
Bethany Nunnery – First (22:36.30)
Andrea Karlen – Seventh (23:42.85)
Ramsey Wagner – 14th (24:45.92)
Donia Nichols –16th (24:55.63)
Stephanie McDermott – 17th (24:58.06)
COACH'S COMMENTS:
"We had two of our runners pass out on the course," said Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Mike Smith, "and that made it impossible for us to win. Bethany Nunnery was outstanding and won the race easily. If Sam Coletti and Abby Halbrook had been able to finish, the outcome would be quite a bit different. As devastated as the women are at the result, they have tremendous resolve and will bounce back.
"The rebuilding of our program is a marathon, not a sprint. We have to stick to our process and keep working and we will get where we want to go."
