DETAILS
- The teams each have two games under their belts. Army defeated the Pioneers, 4-0, and tied Colgate 2-2, while Sacred Heart fell to the Black Knights and rebounded with a win opposite Merrimack, 2-1, last weekend.
- The Pioneers were fueled by a two-goal second period opposite the Warriors with the tallies coming from Nick Lotito and Evan Jasper.
- The overall series between Army and Sacred Heart is now knotted at 27-27-7. The Black Knights improved to 18-9-3 at home, and head coach Brian Riley increased his record versus the Pioneers to 19-17-7.
LAST WEEK: SEASON OPENER
- The Black Knights topped the Pioneers 4-0 last Friday to pick up their first league win of the season to show a two-game unbeaten streak.
- It was the first time Army shutout the Pioneers since Feb. 4, 2004 when the Cadets topped them by an identical score of 4-0.
- Parker Gahagen earned the shut out in net with 33 saves, including 14 in the third period. This was the fifth shutout of Gahagen's career and first against Sacred Heart.
- Taylor Maruya had a hand in three goals on the night, a career-high for the sophomore. The Black Knights' goal scorers included Michael Wilson, Brandon McGuire, Conor Andrle and Clint Carlisle.
- On Saturday, Army played host to the Florida Panthers and New Jersey Devils for an NHL exhibition game which saw the Panthers come out on top 4-2.
ARMY RANKS HIGH IN AHA CATEGORIES
- After posting an unblemished record over the first two weekends of hockey, the Black Knights rank highly in multiple statistical categories for the league.
- Due to Gahagen's superb goaltending skills, Army ranks 1st in goals against average at .960.
- The Cadets are second in saves percentage (.968) and third in special teams net (+1).
- In league-only statistical rankings, Army is first in goals allowed after the shutout and first in penalty kill percentage with a perfect 100%.
SPREADING THE WEALTH
- Friday night's game featured four different goal scorers for the Black Knights and four players who tallied assists.
- Taylor Maruya and Clint Carlisle were the only Cadets who notched two-plus points after Maruya dished out three assists and Carlisle netted one and assisted on another.
SCOUTING SACRED HEART
- The Pioneers are now 1-1-0 on the year after splitting their games last weekend. Sacred Heart dropped a 4-0 decision to Army on Friday night and turned around to defeat Merrimack 2-1 on Saturday.
- Evan Jasper and Nick Lotito both had goals for the Pioneers last weekend as four skaters earned assists in Jeff Carroll, Liam Clare, Justin Danforth and Mitch Nylen.
- Brett Magnus was in net for SHU both nights to post a 2.06 goals against average and a .907 saves percentage.
AHA TEAMS GAIN NATIONAL ATTENTION
- Teams in the Atlantic Hockey Association have been gaining national attention early in the season.
- Air Force has jumped into the USCHO.com National Poll this week. After downing then No. 5 Boston College, 2-1, and tying Ohio State, 3-3 (OT), who ranks 19th in this week's poll, the Falcons have secured the No. 18 slot.
- RIT, Bentley and Holy Cross are also garnering attention as they have all received votes.
