Mundekis Sets Record at Final Day at Penn State
January 30, 2016 | Women's Track and Field
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – Freshman Cassie Mundekis of the Army West Point women's track and field team broke the program record in the 800-meter run in the second and final day of the Penn State National Invitational from the Horace Ashenfelter III Indoor Track on Saturday. The Black Knights split the squad this weekend as part of the team also went to the Armory Invite in New York City. Â
"There were a lot of impressive mark here at Penn State with our athletes," said Director of Track and Field and Cross Country Mike Smith. "Cassie's school record in the 800 was outstanding. That record has stood for almost 20 years and she has only run the event twice. What impressed me the most was that she did it alone and won by nearly six seconds."
Mundekis won the second heat of the event with a time of 2:10.95, breaking Roxanne Theobald's record of 2:11.10 at the 1996 ECAC Championships. The next closest time in her heat was 2:16.04.
Megan Gemar also tied for ninth in the pole vault at Penn State, clearing the height of 3.55 meters.
At the Armory, freshman Maddie Schneider tied for third in the pole vault after clearing 3.41 meters and was joined in the event's top-10 list by Abby Vorhaus who tied for seventh-place after vaulting 3.11 meters.
"We really wanted to set ourselves up for next weekend, so I was hoping that we would have some seasonal bests and wins our flights and heats," added Smith. "I saw a lot of that. Our athletes are learning how to rise to a higher standard. We need to keep challenging them."
In other field events, Cori Lemere placed third in the long jump with a mark of 5.40 meters. Rebecca Cousens also finished eighth in the weight throw with a 20-pound toss of 12.58 meters.
On the track, Stephanie McDermott placed seventh in the mile with a time of 5:30.39.
The Black Knights return to action next Saturday, Feb. 6, as they travel to Annapolis, Md., for the Navy dual meet. The women's meet will follow the men's and is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
