WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's tennis team opened its 2016 spring season with roaring success, defeating Binghamton 5-2 and Sacred Heart 4-3. The Black Knights hosted the two as all three teams were playing in their first contests of the year. Army starts the year at 2-0 while the Bearcats and Pioneers are each 0-1.
"This is probably one of my most athletic teams," said Army head coach Paul Peck. "We got the chance to get a lot of people in the line-up today which is good because you need to have depth. In a long season, you need to be able to count on everybody. They all stepped up."
The Black Knights swept Binghamton in doubles while taking four of the six singles matches. Army's Carolyn Pitman was the only individual in the first match to pick-up wins in singles and doubles. The senior topped Binghamton's Sara Kohtz in the top singles match 6-2, 7-6 (6-0) and teamed with Kirby Einck for a 6-2 victory in the second doubles slot.
The Sacred Heart match was more contested for the Black Knights. In the late match, Nancy Porter was the lone Black Knight to secure victories in both singles and doubles. The junior, playing in the number five singles position, was forced to battle back in her singles pairing after losing 7-6 in the opening set. Porter then grinded out a 7-5 victory in the second set before topping Taylor Gurda 6-2 in the final frame. In doubles, Porter paired with Einck in the second spot for a 6-4 win.
Allyson Hayley was forced to overcome an early deficit as well. The junior fell 6-1 to Lindsey Post in the first set of the number two singles pairing. Hayley's gutsy 7-5 victory the middle frame carried into the last set as she won 5-2 following an injury forfeit. The Houston, Texas native won 6-2, 6-2 in the fifth singles spot against Binghamton and was the lone competitor to go 2-0 in singles today.
"The fact they are fighting as hard as they could because they didn't want to let their teammates down shows a lot," stated Peck.
Genevieve McCormick cruised to a 6-0, 6-4 win in the third position. The freshman was competing in her first dual meet singles match for Army.
The Black Knights welcome Seton Hall tomorrow as they look to continue their perfect start to the season. This will be the Pirates first match of the year. First serve is at noon.
"It's going to be a good competitive match," marked Peck. "They have a strong international line-up."
