Women's Swim & Dive Prepares for Tri-Meet
January 21, 2016 | Women's Swimming and Diving
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's swimming and diving team will close-out the meet portion of its season when the Black Knights travel to Fairfax, Va., for a tri-meet against George Mason and conference foe American Friday, Jan. 22, at 12 p.m.
Â
The meet had been moved up from the original date due to the winter storm that is expected to hit the D.C. area this weekend.
Â
"Dual-meets are a great way to check in and get an objective measurement of the effectiveness of our training," said head coach Mickey Wender. "Performance at these meets is a good barometer of progress, while discovering what needs to be worked on individually. I think collectively, it's a lot of fun to go head-to-head, while traveling around a bit and competing in different facilities. It is sad that this is the last one of the year, but the dual-meet season has been extraordinary, certainly the best in my ten years here."
Â
Army improved to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the Patriot League last weekend with wins over Colgate and Lafayette. The Black Knights notched 11 first-place finishes in the tri-meet.
Â
"The wins this season have been a byproduct of the team's consistency and ability to perform steadily, and in swimming and diving that goes a long way," said Wender. "We've had our focus on being best when it matters the most, at the conference meet. From our weight training, dryland, morning workouts and pool workouts, we have stayed the course and stayed consistent. The individuals we have on this team understand what their role is and they execute at a very high level. The quick maturity of our plebe class has been a testament of our success"
Â
Kelly Hamilton was named the Patriot League's Swimmer of the Week Monday after garnering two individual wins, a runner-up finish and being part of the winning 200 medley relay team to total 31 points for Army. Hamilton won the 100 back (56.94) and 100 free (50.19) by two or more seconds, and was the runner-up in the 50 free by 0.07 seconds to Molly Mucciarone who clocked a 24.00.
Â
Jorie Mason won the 1-meter and 3-meter Saturday. She had a career-best score off the 1-meter with 197.25 points, the next-best score was 177.45. She was just 1.27 points shy of her career-high on the 3-meter with 220.50 points.
Â
Last season, Army defeated George Mason for the first time in program history by a score of 165-129 to bring the all-time series count to 7-1 in favor of the Patriots. The Black Knights lead American 10-2 all-time.
Â
"George Mason is very similar to our team," explained Wender. "It will be a good and competitive match-up for our final weekend of dual-meets. If we are going to have a successful season, we have to earn it because no one is going to hand it to us. I can't say enough good things about what the women's team has done this year and the progress and development of their program."
