RESULTS
HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Army West Point women's swimming and diving team captured two more Patriot League wins Saturday afternoon. The Black Knights defeated Colgate, 182-106, and Lafayette, 207-81, to improve to 8-1 on the season and 4-1 in the league. The Black Knights notched 11 first-place finishes.
"I am very proud of the team's performance today," said head coach Mickey Wender. "I was pleased with the team's attitude, effort and execution. We're in a good place and right on track for peaking at the Patriot League Championships in 30 day. This team has a tremendous work ethic and continues to impress me with our ability to rise to the occasion on the road. We had great contributions across the board. Our plebes stepped up in a big way. The best is yet to come."
Army began the meet with one-two finishes in the 200 medley relay. Kelly Hamilton, Jess Fabrizio, Molly Mucciarone and Jenna Forrester finished first in 1:47.76, and were followed by the second place team that was made up of plebes Kim Sembrano, Kara Wineinger, Cecelia Croman and Bailey Smith (1:49.65.
Sabrina Mortell won the 1,000 free after touching the wall in 10:32.55. Sidney Evans (10:37.97) and Ana Marie Bistrow (10:52.32) followed in third and fourth, respectively.
The Black Knights went one-two-three in the 200 free with Sowinski leading the way in 1:54.80. Mortell was second with a time of 1:56.85, while Julia Bush recorded a 1:57.04 to place third.
Hamilton (56.94), Croman (58.58), Smith (58.79) and Sembrano (1:00.64) swept the 100 back finishing first-through-fourth.
In the 100 breast, Wineinger was the top finisher for the Cadets with a time of 1:07.57. Fabrizio was closely behind after clocking a third-place time of 1:08.58.
Shannon Rogers recorded a 2:12.99 in the 200 fly to place third. Teresa Groton was fourth in 2:13.64, while Chloe Kargodorian and Wineinger tied for fifth in 2:15.42.
Mucciarone and Hamilton finished one-two in the 50 free for Army. Mucciarone recorded a 24.00, while Hamilton clocked a 24.07. Forrester placed fourth with a time of 25.39.
In the 100 free, Hamilton claimed the top spot after touching the wall in 52.19, and Bush (53.78), Sowinski (53.96) and Forrester (54.48) rounded out the top five.
The Black Knights earned another sweep in the 200 back. Smith (2:03.52), Croman (2:08.08), Sembrano (2:09.90) and Kate Machorek (2:12.32) placed first-through-fourth.
Jess Burkett was Army's top finisher in the 200 breast with a second-best time of 2:26.60. Jess Ambrose finished third in 2:27.78, while Wineinger (2:27.95) and Fabrizio (2:28.23) rounded out the top five.
Mortell notched another first-place finish in the tri-meet during the 500 free. She recorded a 5:06.52, which was six seconds faster than the second-best finisher. Claire Willis placed third in the event with a time of 5:16.60, and was followed by Bistrow (5:18.73) and Rogers (5:20.72).
Mucciarone won the 100 fly with a time of 57.55. Rogers was fifth after finishing in 1:00.50.
Jorie Mason won on both boards for the Black Knights. She tallied a score of 197.25 off the 1-meter and earned a mark of 220.50 off the 3-meter, just 1.27 points away from tying her career-high.
Rebecca Sleight also saw success off both boards. She was third on both the 1-meter (149.48) and 3-meter (143.63).
With today's win, Army took a 12-11 lead in the all-time series with the Raiders. The Black Knights increased its all-time lead over the Leopards to 9-3.
The Cadets will be back in action on Sunday, Jan. 24, when they travel to George Mason to face the Patriots and American.
